Riyadh Air Opens Southeast Asia Network with Inaugural Kuala Lumpur Service

Riyadh Air has officially launched its first destination in Southeast Asia, inaugurating a three-times-weekly nonstop service between Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur as the airline continues expanding its international network in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions.

The new route represents a significant milestone for the Kingdom’s new national carrier, creating a direct air bridge between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia while strengthening connectivity with the wider ASEAN region.

Inaugural celebrations were held at both King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), attended by senior airline executives, government representatives and airport officials from both countries.

Strengthening Saudi Arabia–Malaysia Connectivity

The launch of the Riyadh–Kuala Lumpur service reflects growing economic, tourism and cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.

Operating three flights per week, the new nonstop route is designed to support increasing demand for business travel, tourism, education, trade and religious journeys between the two countries while providing improved connectivity across Southeast Asia.

Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air, described the inaugural flight as an important step in the airline’s international growth strategy.

“Today’s inaugural flight to Kuala Lumpur is a defining moment for Riyadh Air as we establish our footprint in Southeast Asia. This route is far more than a direct connection between two capital cities; it builds a vital bridge between Saudi Arabia and the broader ASEAN region.”

He added that the service supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives while delivering Riyadh Air’s digitally focused passenger experience.

Collaboration Supports Vision 2030

The route was developed in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Air Connectivity Program (ACP), the government initiative responsible for supporting the Kingdom’s National Tourism Strategy and Aviation Strategy.

By expanding direct international connectivity, the new service contributes to Saudi Arabia’s broader objective of positioning Riyadh as a leading global aviation hub, while encouraging increased visitor arrivals and supporting economic diversification.

The route is expected to strengthen travel across multiple sectors, including corporate travel, education exchanges, tourism and bilateral trade.

It will also play an important role in facilitating religious travel by providing Malaysian Umrah and Hajj pilgrims with improved access to Saudi Arabia while offering Saudi travellers a convenient gateway to Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian region.

Kuala Lumpur Strengthens Its Global Network

For Malaysia Airports, the arrival of Riyadh Air further enhances Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s position as a major regional gateway.

The airline becomes the ninth Middle Eastern carrier serving Kuala Lumpur, expanding connectivity between Southeast Asia and the Gulf region.

Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, welcomed the launch, highlighting its strategic importance for Malaysia’s aviation sector.

“Riyadh Air’s decision to make Kuala Lumpur its first destination in Southeast Asia is significant for KLIA and for Malaysia. As the ninth Middle Eastern airline to serve KLIA, its entry further strengthens our connectivity with a region that is an increasingly important market for tourism, trade and investment.”

He added that the new service supports Malaysia Airports’ strategy of expanding international connectivity while strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s role as a gateway linking Southeast Asia with global markets.

Building an International Network

The Kuala Lumpur service represents another step in Riyadh Air’s broader strategy to establish an extensive global route network connecting Saudi Arabia with major international business and tourism destinations.

As the airline continues expanding its operations, new international services are expected to support the Kingdom’s long-term ambitions to become a leading global aviation, tourism and logistics hub.
