CharterDesk Coordinates Medical Air Transfer from France to Beirut
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Emir Ozdabak, Managing Director of CharterDesk

CharterDesk has coordinated a post-surgery medical air transfer from Nîmes, France, to Beirut, Lebanon, bringing together medical clearance, specialist personnel, flight permits, ambulance access and a Learjet 45 configured as an air ambulance.

The operation highlights the level of coordination required for time-critical medical aviation, where aircraft availability must be aligned with a patient’s medical condition, regulatory approvals and ground-handling arrangements.

According to information provided by CharterDesk, the company received the request approximately one week before the planned transfer, while the patient was preparing to undergo surgery. The final departure date depended on the patient’s post-operative recovery and confirmation from the treating medical team that the patient was fit to fly.

Medical clearance determines flight timing

The patient travelled aboard a Learjet 45 configured as an ambulance aircraft, accompanied by a family member, a doctor, a nurse and the aircraft’s cabin crew.

The aircraft was equipped with a stretcher and medical equipment. The precise equipment requirements were determined jointly by the hospital doctor and the physician travelling on the aircraft, based on the patient’s condition following surgery.

CharterDesk Managing Director Emir Özdabak said the patient’s medical condition ultimately determined the timetable for the operation.

The hospital’s post-operative assessment was therefore a critical part of the planning process. While the company prepared the aircraft and other operational elements in advance, the flight could only be confirmed once the required medical clearance had been received.

The flight was scheduled 48 hours after the medical certificate confirming the patient’s fitness to fly was issued.

Coordinating doctors and aircraft operations

The hospital doctor and the physician travelling on the aircraft maintained direct communication before departure, allowing the medical team to coordinate the patient’s condition, equipment requirements and transfer arrangements.

Gökhan Kaya, a member of the CharterDesk team, handled the flight operation, while other members of the company supported the mission remotely.

For the operator, the process illustrates the difference between arranging an aircraft and managing a complete medical transfer. The operation required coordination between the hospital, medical personnel, aircraft operator, airport, authorities and ground transportation provider.

Airport access designed around the patient

Ground arrangements were another important element of the mission.

CharterDesk arranged the necessary permits in both France and Lebanon, while its local partner in France secured the required permission for the operation at Nîmes Airport.

The French partner also coordinated direct ambulance access to the aircraft, allowing the vehicle to approach the aircraft rather than requiring the patient to be transferred over a longer distance within the airport environment.

The ambulance arrived at Nîmes Airport approximately one hour before the aircraft’s scheduled 11:00 local departure.

Such direct access can be particularly important for post-operative patients, reducing unnecessary movement between vehicles and aircraft and allowing the medical team to maintain control of the transfer process.

Five-hour flight to Beirut

Following departure from Nîmes, the Learjet 45 arrived in Beirut at approximately 17:30 local time, with the flight taking around five hours.

After landing, the patient was transferred directly to hospital for continued medical care.

The complete operation therefore linked several separate elements of the medical logistics chain: post-operative medical assessment, fitness-to-fly certification, aircraft preparation, specialist medical personnel, international flight permissions, airport access and ambulance transportation.

Building a broader charter operation

The medical mission forms part of CharterDesk’s wider expansion into international charter services.

The Hungary-based company officially launched its global operations at Air Cargo China in June 2026, offering air cargo charter, passenger charter, private jet charter and ACMI leasing services.

The company has positioned its charter business around tailored solutions for complex and time-critical transportation requirements.

In July, CharterDesk completed two cargo charter operations. The first involved an Airbus A321 freighter carrying 11 tonnes of automotive parts from Cairo to Istanbul, while the second used an Airbus A330 freighter to transport 59 tonnes of temperature-sensitive perishables from Istanbul to Ouagadougou.

The medical transfer to Beirut represents a different category of charter operation, but it follows the same principle of coordinating aircraft availability and specialised operational requirements around a time-critical mission.

Medical aviation demands integrated planning

Medical air transport is particularly dependent on precise coordination because the aircraft schedule cannot be considered separately from the patient’s condition.

In this case, the medical certificate became the key trigger for final scheduling. Once the patient was declared fit to fly, CharterDesk had to align the aircraft, medical team, permits and ground arrangements within a defined timeframe.

The operation also demonstrates the importance of local partners. Access at the departure airport, regulatory permissions and ambulance positioning all had to be arranged alongside the flight plan.

For international medical transfers, the final journey begins well before the aircraft departs and continues until the patient reaches the receiving medical facility.

CharterDesk’s Nîmes-Beirut operation illustrates how medical aviation, charter planning and ground logistics must function as a single coordinated process when transporting patients following surgery.
