Air cargo industry veteran Roland Weil has joined global ground handling provider Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) as Vice President of Business Development for Germany, marking a significant leadership move after more than 20 years with airport operator Fraport.

The appointment underscores WFS’s plans to expand its presence at Frankfurt Airport, Europe’s largest cargo hub, as the company seeks to strengthen its freight forwarding and e-commerce handling capabilities in one of the continent’s most important logistics gateways.

Strategic Expansion at Frankfurt Airport

WFS confirmed that Weil will take up his new position with immediate effect, supporting the company’s strategy to broaden its cargo handling services in Germany.

The move coincides with WFS’s plans to occupy a large logistics facility in Cargo City South, previously operated by DHL. The new site is expected to play a key role in expanding the company’s operational capacity at Frankfurt and enabling the development of additional services for freight forwarders, airlines and e-commerce operators.

Industry observers note that Frankfurt remains one of the most competitive cargo markets in Europe, making experienced leadership critical for logistics providers seeking to grow in the region.

Four Decades in Air Cargo

Weil brings more than 40 years of experience in the air cargo and aviation sector to his new role.

He began his career at Air Canada in Frankfurt, working in the airline’s sales department. He later spent several years with Delta Air Lines, where he held a range of senior commercial roles.

During his tenure at Delta, Weil served as Regional Director of Sales for Southern Europe and Southeast Asia, overseeing commercial development and cargo partnerships across key international markets.

Key Role in Frankfurt’s Cargo Development

Weil joined Fraport in 2005, where he quickly became a central figure in the development of the airport’s cargo business.

In his early role, he served as a primary contact point for airline route planners and network development teams, helping to optimise scheduled flight operations and strengthen Frankfurt’s position as a global cargo hub.

In February 2013, he was appointed Vice President Sales Cargo at Fraport, a role in which he played a pivotal part in expanding the airport’s air freight activity and strengthening relationships with international cargo carriers and logistics partners.

During his time at Fraport, Weil also helped foster collaboration across the cargo community and was a founding member and the first managing director of Air Cargo Community Frankfurt, an industry platform designed to enhance coordination among airlines, logistics companies, forwarders and airport stakeholders.

WFS Strengthens Leadership for Growth

Welcoming Weil to the company, Claus Wagner, Managing Director of FCS Frankfurt Cargo Services—the Frankfurt-based subsidiary of WFS—said the appointment would support the company’s plans to expand cargo handling services and develop new products in the German market.

According to Wagner, Weil’s extensive experience across airlines, airports and logistics organisations positions him well to help drive the next phase of WFS’s growth in Frankfurt.

Expanding Opportunities in a Key Cargo Hub

Frankfurt Airport remains Europe’s busiest air cargo hub and a critical gateway for international freight flows between Europe, Asia and North America.

With e-commerce shipments continuing to grow and logistics networks evolving, cargo handlers are increasingly investing in infrastructure, digital tools and specialised facilities to capture new business opportunities.

Weil’s appointment reflects WFS’s ambition to expand its operational footprint and strengthen relationships with airlines and freight forwarders operating through Frankfurt’s extensive cargo ecosystem.
