The B747-8Fs will operate on Qantas Freight’s existing network between 10 key cargo hubs in Australia, China and the US, subject to regulatory approval, with additional routes “currently being explored”.
The aircraft, operated by US-lessor Atlas Air on behalf of Qantas, offer 20% more freight capacity and space for seven extra cargo pallets compared with the B747-400Fs they are replacing. Those B747-400Fs were also operated by Atlas Air for the Australian carrier.
Qantas Freight executive manager Paul Jones said that the B747-8F aircraft would better meet customer demand for freight capacity around the globe.
He said: “More capacity and better reliability means we can continue to deliver for our customers in Australia and around the globe.
“These aircraft have a far better environmental footprint, producing less carbon emissions and offering greater efficiency, something that we know is really important to our customers.”
The arrival of the aircraft follows Qantas Freight’s announcement earlier this month of a new seven-year agreement with Australia Post for an expanded domestic and international airfreight service to support the growing demand for parcels.
The agreement, worth more than A$1bn, also paves the way for up to three Airbus A321 converted passenger to freighter aircraft to join the fleet from October 2020.
Each A321P2F will add nearly 50% more capacity – or an additional nine tonnes – compared with the existing Boeing 737 freighters.
Qantas will be the first airline in the world to operate the A321 as a freighter.
The agreement will give Australia Post customers access to Qantas Freight’s dedicated freighter aircraft and priority access to the cargo space on up to 1,500 Qantas and Jetstar passenger flights to over 110 destinations each day, in addition to space on partner airlines globally.
