Ostend, Belgium – Ostend-Bruges Airport has announced the appointment of Johan Leunen as its new Cargo Development Director, underscoring the airport’s commitment to expanding its cargo operations and accelerating sustainable growth in the regional logistics sector.
With more than 23 years of experience in the air cargo industry, Leunen brings deep expertise in cargo development, airline partnerships, and market strategy. His appointment marks a key step in the airport’s efforts to strengthen its role as a vital logistics hub in Western Europe.
A Veteran in Cargo Development
Leunen began his air cargo career in 2000, gaining hands-on experience in cargo handling, forwarding, and airport development. Over the years, he advanced through diverse roles in customer service, sales management, and business development—building a well-rounded understanding of the global cargo ecosystem.
He spent a significant part of his career at Brussels Airport Company, where he joined in 2012 as Cargo Marketing Manager. In this role, he focused on supporting airline partners, promoting cargo growth, and positioning Brussels as a key European logistics hub.
Until early 2025, Leunen served as Senior Business & Development Manager Cargo at Brussels Airport, where he played an instrumental role in attracting new airlines, logistics companies, and expanding international cargo connectivity. His strategic insights and strong industry relationships have made him a respected figure in the European air cargo sector.
Strengthening Ostend-Bruges’ Cargo Vision
In his new position, Leunen will collaborate closely with Cargo Sales Director Rose Yiqian Qiu and Egis Group’s Director of Cargo Strategy, Steven Verhasselt, to expand the airport’s network, develop new cargo routes, and enhance operational efficiency.
Their joint focus will be on building Ostend-Bruges Airport’s reputation as a reliable, sustainable, and customer-focused cargo hub, capable of handling a diverse mix of freight—from e-commerce and perishables to specialized and time-critical shipments.
