Joby Aviation has completed what it describes as the first fully autonomous flight across the United States, demonstrating the potential for self-flying aircraft to support commercial cargo, medical supply deliveries, emergency response and defence logistics.

The company’s autonomous J208 aircraft, based on a converted Cessna Caravan, covered 3,199 miles on the eastbound leg of Joby’s 2026 Electric Skies tour. The aircraft completed taxiing, take-off, navigation and landing without control inputs from the onboard safety pilot, while the mission was remotely supervised from Joby’s Autonomy Headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, up to 2,323 miles from the aircraft.

Joby said the demonstration provides a potential pathway for scaling autonomous air logistics by integrating its autonomy system with an already-certified aircraft platform.

Autonomous Cargo and Logistics Potential

The cross-country flight was designed to demonstrate how autonomous aircraft could operate in real-world environments and support time-critical logistics.

Potential applications include commercial freight, medical transport, disaster response and defence logistics, particularly in locations where conventional air services can be difficult, expensive or slow to deploy.

The aircraft also operated in complex and high-density aviation environments during the journey, including Phoenix Deer Valley Airport in Arizona. Joby said the J208 demonstrated the ability to respond to severe weather and thunderstorms by rerouting in real time, including at airports with which the aircraft had no previous familiarity.

“This journey across America offers a glimpse into a new era of aviation,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation.

“Autonomy has an important role to play in the future of flight, allowing us to connect remote communities, deliver critical supplies, respond faster to disasters, support military operations, and keep pilots out of harm’s way.”

From California to the Outer Banks

The eastbound journey began at Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, California, before continuing through a series of operational demonstrations across the US.

At Phoenix Deer Valley, Joby showcased dual-use applications for defence, first responders and cargo as part of Arizona’s participation in the uFLY coalition.

The aircraft then travelled to Fort Worth, Texas, where Joby demonstrated the potential for autonomous freight operations at Alliance Airport, a major industrial logistics hub. The stop also coincided with the company’s first air taxi eIPP flight in Texas under the White House-backed programme.

At Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, Joby demonstrated representative military flight operations and tactical defence capabilities.

The eastbound leg concluded with an autonomous landing at Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, near Kitty Hawk and the location associated with the Wright brothers’ first powered flight.

Connecting Autonomous Flight With Remote Communities

Following the transcontinental flight, Joby conducted a low pass near the First Flight Monument at Kitty Hawk before landing at Dare County Regional Airport.

The company said the operation demonstrated how autonomous aircraft could eventually provide flexible point-to-point logistics services to remote and underserved communities, including the movement of medical supplies and emergency freight.

The North Carolina demonstrations form part of Joby’s work with the state Department of Transportation under the eLIFT-NC initiative, which is focused on healthcare logistics. Elsewhere in the country, the company’s participation in the uFLY coalition is examining the integration of autonomous aircraft into challenging environments, including high-altitude terrain and extreme-temperature regions.

Technology Tested in Military Exercises

Joby said its autonomous flight technology has now accumulated more than 400 flights and 800 hours of automated operations across controlled and uncontrolled airspace.

The system incorporates technology developed by the autonomy team Joby acquired from Xwing in 2024. The technology has also been demonstrated during US military exercises.

During the Air Force’s Agile Flag exercise, Joby used an autonomous Cessna Caravan to transport critical replacement components between military bases and public airports. The company said the missions helped return other aircraft to service approximately 24 hours sooner than a conventional logistics run.

During the 2025 Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC) exercise, Joby demonstrated remote operation of its autonomous technology across the Pacific and Hawaii. The company reported more than 7,000 miles of autonomous operations during the exercise, with aircraft supported by remote ground-control operations from Guam.

Importantly, Joby’s system operates under a supervised-autonomy model. A ground-based remote pilot serves as pilot in command, supervising the flight, updating flight plans and managing air traffic control communications. A monitoring pilot may also be onboard for selected operations.

Westbound Journey to Follow

The completed eastbound crossing represents the first major milestone in Joby’s month-long 2026 Electric Skies tour.

Following the North Carolina stop, the autonomous aircraft is scheduled to continue westbound, with planned demonstrations in Raleigh, the Fredericksburg/Washington, D.C. area, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City and Portland. The tour is intended to demonstrate autonomous operations across a range of airspace, terrain and logistics environments.

The next phase will provide further opportunities to test the aircraft in operational settings relevant to freight and public-service applications. Louisville, for example, is being used to showcase cargo automation around UPS Worldport, while operations in Oklahoma and Utah form part of the broader uFLY evaluation of autonomous flight in complex and high-altitude environments.

For the air cargo sector, the significance of the demonstration lies not only in the distance covered but in the operational scenarios being tested. If autonomous aircraft can reliably combine remote supervision, dynamic routing and point-to-point operations, the technology could eventually expand options for moving critical freight to locations where speed, flexibility and access are more important than conventional network economics.
