CargoLand by LGG, in partnership with Cathay Cargo, has once again demonstrated its leadership in specialised live-animal logistics by facilitating the air transport of high-value competition horses to Hong Kong for a major international jumping event. Acting as the European gateway, LGG coordinated the long-haul charter in cooperation with Peden Bloodstock, an internationally recognised expert in the safe transport of elite sport horses and bloodstock worldwide.
The operation underscores LGG’s welfare-first approach, purpose-built infrastructure, and operational precision, all critical factors in managing complex equine logistics. Central to the operation is the Horse Inn, CargoLand’s dedicated on-airport equine facility capable of accommodating up to 54 horses in individual, climate-controlled stalls.
With direct airside access, horses were transferred seamlessly from stable to aircraft, minimising transit time and exposure to ramp conditions. Veterinary services were available around the clock, ensuring animal welfare throughout the journey. Upon arrival in Hong Kong, horses were housed at the Horse Inn before continuing by road to their final destinations, maintaining continuity in care and monitoring.
During the charter, temperature conditions were maintained at an average of 15°C, as specified by the shipper and formally documented in the Captain’s Notification (NOTOC). Aircraft environmental systems, including the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), were utilised to maintain stable conditions when on the ground, while four onboard grooms and veterinarians accompanied the horses throughout the flight to monitor their wellbeing.
Preparation for this operation began nearly two months in advance, with meticulous coordination between European and Hong Kong stakeholders. LGG’s 24/7 unrestricted cargo operations, flexible slot policies, and full cargo specialisation provided the framework necessary for this time-critical, high-value transport.
Anand Yedery, Regional Head of Cargo Europe at Cathay Cargo, said:
“Transporting elite sport horses requires absolute precision and an uncompromising focus on animal welfare. LGG’s dedicated equine infrastructure and seamless stable-to-aircraft process ensured optimal conditions throughout the operation. Close coordination between all stakeholders was key to delivering a smooth and secure journey to Hong Kong.”
Henry Bullen, Director at Peden Bloodstock, added:
“Calmness, efficiency, planning, and minimal transit times are essential in elite horse transport. The Horse Inn and experienced team provided exactly the environment these horses require. Strong teamwork between the airline, handlers, and veterinarians ensured a stress-free, professionally executed movement.”
Frederic Brun, Head of Commercial Cargo & Logistics at Liege Airport, concluded:
“CargoLand by LGG is built for operations like this. We combine dedicated infrastructure with experienced teams and round-the-clock cargo operations. When transporting elite sport horses, welfare and precision always come first—efficiency follows from meticulous preparation and strong teamwork.”
This successful charter reinforces LGG and Cathay Cargo’s international reputation for elite equine logistics and highlights the growing importance of specialised live-animal transport in global air cargo operations.
