Liege Airport has just received Level 2 Accreditation awarded by ACI Europe (Airports Council International Europe)

This certification programme (Airport Carbon Accreditation), organised in 4 levels, was developed by ACI Europe to encourage airports to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. Their efforts are officially recognised by obtaining an accreditation.

The 4 levels of Airport Carbon Accreditation are the following:

  1. Mapping: the airport operator quantifies and verifies its carbon dioxide emissions and undertakes to reduce them.
  2. Reduction: the airport has set targets for reducing its own emissions and has implemented an action plan and timeline to achieve this goal.
  3. Optimisation: the airport and its partners (suppliers, airlines, etc.) have implemented common measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
  4. Neutrality: the airport has achieved carbon neutrality for its own activities.

In its environmental policy, Liege Airport has defined five lines of action to limit its carbon footprint:

  • Rational use of energy
  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Air quality
  • Legal and regulatory watch
  • Awareness, information and partnership

In addition to acquainting staff with good environmental practices, numerous actions have allowed Liege Airport to reach ACA level 2: office heating by geothermal energy, installation of cogeneration with a heat network, acquisition of electric or hybrid vehicles with the installation of charging stations, purchase of 100% green electricity, etc.

More extensive actions are also under way and confirm the involvement of Liege Airport in fighting climate change and limiting its environmental impact. These include: insulation of buildings, installation of automatic shutters, construction of low energy buildings, programming of thermostats and a system of 3 heat recovery tubes, installation of photovoltaic panels, LED lighting and smart switches, installation of a metering station – air quality, waste management, etc.

In this way, Liege Airport confirms the integration of environmental protection into its corporate strategy. While maintaining its Management System meeting the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard, Liege Airport has further strengthened its environmental action by following the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
