Airline’s advanced cool chain solutions ensure fresh blooms reach European markets

Etihad Cargo, the logistics arm of Etihad Airways, has once again played a pivotal role in global trade by transporting over 500 tonnes of fresh flowers from Nairobi, Kenya, to Europe in time for Valentine’s Day and the upcoming European Mother’s Day. With its state-of-the-art cool chain solutions, including its IATA CEIV-certified FreshForward product, the airline ensures that some of the world’s most sought-after blooms arrive fresh and vibrant at their destinations.

As one of the world’s largest exporters of cut flowers, Kenya experiences a surge in demand during peak seasons, particularly ahead of major celebrations. To meet this demand, Etihad Cargo operated four dedicated flower charters, moving 510 tonnes of flowers from Nairobi to key destinations in Europe, including the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK.

The airline also transports approximately 95 tonnes of flowers from Kenya every week, utilizing its four weekly flights to Nairobi, three via passenger aircraft with bellyhold capacity and one dedicated freighter service.

“The floriculture industry is essential in connecting African producers with global markets,” said Stanislas Brun, Vice President Cargo at Etihad Cargo. “With demand peaking around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, our FreshForward product ensures flowers arrive in perfect condition. Our advanced cool chain infrastructure, combined with our extensive network, allows us to support global trade and the floriculture sector effectively.”

Freshness Guaranteed: How Etihad Cargo Keeps Flowers Blooming

Among the flowers transported are premium big-head roses such as High & Peace, Cappuccino, Cabaret, Topaz, and Roseberry, as well as carefully curated mixed bouquets designed to meet the preferences of European buyers.

Ensuring freshness during transit is a top priority. Flowers are stored at temperatures between 2–8°C, with specialized thermal covers and real-time IoT sensors monitoring conditions throughout the journey. These advanced measures minimize risks and maintain the delicate quality of each shipment.

Beyond Flowers: Supporting Africa’s Agricultural Exports

Etihad Cargo’s FreshForward service extends beyond flowers, supporting the export of fresh fruits and vegetables from Kenya and South Africa. The airline plays a crucial role in moving approximately 72 tonnes of fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, and meat, from South Africa to the UAE and beyond every month.

By leveraging its cool chain technologies, temperature-controlled storage, and predictive analytics, Etihad Cargo ensures these perishables maintain their quality from farm to market, helping African exporters stay competitive in the global trade landscape.

Expanding Connectivity in Africa

With Mother’s Day approaching, Etihad Cargo remains committed to meeting increased demand, continuing its floral exports from Nairobi. Looking ahead, the airline is expanding its African network in 2025, adding new passenger routes to Algiers, Tunis, and El Alamein. These additions will enhance bellyhold capacity and strengthen trade links between Africa, the Middle East, and global markets.

As global demand for fresh flowers and agricultural goods continues to grow, Etihad Cargo’s investment in cutting-edge logistics solutions ensures that businesses across Africa remain well-connected to international buyers, fostering economic growth and sustainable trade
