Spanish flag carrier Iberia has joined International Air Transport Association’s CO2 Connect programme, a strategic initiative designed to deliver accurate, transparent, and standardised carbon emissions data based on real-world airline operations. The move marks a significant step in strengthening data-driven sustainability practices across the aviation sector.
CO2 Connect, developed by IATA, enables participating airlines to provide precise CO₂ emissions calculations derived from operational inputs such as fuel consumption and route-specific data. By improving the consistency and reliability of emissions reporting, the programme supports both airlines and passengers in making more informed, environmentally conscious decisions.
With Iberia’s entry into the initiative, Spain has emerged as the global leader in airline participation within CO2 Connect. The development underscores the country’s growing emphasis on sustainability and its proactive role in advancing transparency standards across the aviation industry.
The inclusion of Iberia also reinforces broader industry momentum toward enhanced environmental accountability. As regulatory pressures and stakeholder expectations continue to rise, access to high-quality emissions data is becoming increasingly critical for airlines seeking to align with international climate goals and demonstrate measurable progress.
In a statement, IATA welcomed the airline’s participation, noting that CO2 Connect plays a vital role in providing “accurate, transparent and consistent CO₂ emissions data, based on real airline operational input.” The association highlighted that expanding the programme’s airline base is essential to improving the robustness and global applicability of emissions reporting frameworks.
Iberia’s decision to join the initiative reflects a wider shift within the aviation sector toward integrating digital tools and verified datasets to support sustainability strategies. By leveraging programmes such as CO2 Connect, airlines are better positioned to enhance reporting accuracy, optimise operational efficiency, and contribute to industry-wide decarbonisation efforts.
As sustainability continues to shape the future of air transport, initiatives like CO2 Connect are expected to play a central role in building trust, ensuring accountability, and enabling meaningful progress toward reducing aviation’s environmental footprint.
