Mark Sutch, a veteran executive in the cargo industry, has been appointed as the chief commercial officer for international operations at CarGo, the cargo arm of Indigo, a low-cost airline in India.
Sutch had previously worked for Cathay Cargo for several years, including five years as the regional general manager for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, based in Mumbai.
He briefly worked for CMA CGM Air Cargo but left after just five months when the shipping line decided to outsource some of its functions to AF-KLM.
Indigo has been attracting international talent, including Pieter Elbers, the former president and CEO of KLM, who now heads the airline.
Indigo has also invested in freighters and has recently launched its first international cargo flight between Kolkata and Yangon.
Sutch has expressed his excitement about the opportunity to grow the share of Indian carriers in the import and export of air cargo in the country.
He highlighted Indigo’s growing international network, and the airline’s position as one of the largest airlines in the world by fleet and movements.
India’s aviation and cargo sector is experiencing a resurgence, with Air India, now under Tata Group ownership, ordering 470 aircraft, and Jet Airways also rising again and considering ordering 100 aircraft.
In addition, new freighter operators such as Pradhaan Air Express have emerged, and Amazon Air has entered the market.
