Intradco Global, the world’s leading specialist in equine and live animal air transport and part of the Chapman Freeborn Group, has completed the large-scale shipment of 1,200 breeding pigs from Denmark to the Philippines. The charter operation, conducted in July aboard a Boeing 747-400F freighter, underscored the company’s expertise in combining complex logistics with uncompromising animal welfare.
Precision Planning for a Complex Mission
Transporting live animals on such a scale is never a simple undertaking. For Intradco Global, the successful flight was the culmination of nearly three months of preparation involving multiple stakeholders, detailed planning, and strict risk management.
The pigs were destined for a breeding and genetic multiplication program at the client’s farm in the Philippines. To ensure their welfare during transit, the animals were quarantined in a dedicated facility ahead of departure and placed on a carefully managed pre-flight diet.
According to Luca Mario Leisi, Account Manager – Live Animal at Intradco Global, the project required tailor-made solutions from start to finish. “Bespoke wooden transport crates were designed specifically for this shipment,” Leisi explained. “Each was equipped with extra-large watering systems to keep the pigs hydrated and comfortable throughout the long-haul journey.”
Innovation in Animal Handling
Loading 1,200 pigs onto a freighter presented unique challenges, but Intradco Global’s specialist equipment ensured a smooth process. The company deployed its custom-designed ‘pig lift’, a converted van that allows pigs to be transferred from lorries into crates without the stress of walking up steep ramps.
“This innovation is critical to minimizing risk and ensuring animal comfort,” said Leisi. “Once the pigs were secured in their crates, they were carefully loaded onto the aircraft with every step taken to reduce stress.”
During the flight, animal welfare remained the top priority. A dedicated Intradco Global specialist, alongside a representative from the client, monitored the pigs throughout the journey, working closely with the flight crew to ensure seamless coordination.
Adapting Under Pressure
Even with extensive planning, challenges can arise. A last-minute change of departure airport required Intradco’s team to quickly reconfigure arrangements. “This was managed skillfully by our operations team,” noted Leisi. “Despite the adjustment, we were able to deliver on schedule and fully meet the client’s expectations.”
Trusted Global Expertise
The shipment reaffirms Intradco Global’s reputation as a world leader in live animal air transport, trusted by zoos, aquariums, conservation groups, and agricultural enterprises worldwide. From rhinos and racehorses to livestock and exotic species, the company has built its name on delivering animals safely and securely while adhering to the highest welfare standards.
Reflecting on the Denmark–Philippines project, Leisi emphasized the blend of innovation, collaboration, and expertise that made the mission possible:
“This shipment showcased not only our bespoke equipment and processes but also the dedication of our team. Delivering 1,200 breeding pigs halfway across the world requires precision, resilience, and a relentless focus on welfare — qualities Intradco Global brings to every project.”
Raising the Bar in Live Animal Logistics
As demand for specialist livestock movements grows in global agriculture, Intradco Global continues to set the benchmark for live animal transport by air. With its mix of technical know-how, custom equipment, and an uncompromising commitment to animal welfare, the company remains at the forefront of one of the most challenging segments of the cargo industry.
