- ABM and Portaramp have co-developed the aviation industry’s first universal, portable access ramp, adapted from rail sector technology to serve passengers with reduced mobility across multiple aircraft types.
- After a year of joint R&D and successful live trials, the ramps are now deployed at five major UK airports, improving safety, operational efficiency, and boarding dignity.
- This innovation marks Portaramp’s strategic entry into aviation and underscores ABM’s commitment to inclusive travel experiences, reinforcing its reputation for assisted services.
In a landmark step for accessible air travel, ABM has joined forces with UK-based manufacturer Portaramp to deliver the aviation industry’s first universal, portable access ramp. Adapted from technology long used in the rail sector, the solution has been specifically engineered to serve passengers with reduced mobility across a wide range of aircraft types.
Following a year of joint research, development, and live trials, the ramps are now operational at Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Stansted, and Aberdeen airports. Their introduction is set to raise the bar for safety, efficiency, and boarding dignity, while reducing delays for airlines and providing greater reassurance for passengers requiring assistance.
From Rail to Runway
Portaramp, renowned for designing lightweight, portable ramps for global rail networks, has entered aviation for the first time through this collaboration. Working closely with ABM, the company re-engineered its proven technology to meet aviation’s unique operational and safety demands. Design refinements included narrowing the ramp width, adding reinforced rubber protection, and adapting fittings for multiple aircraft configurations.
Extensive trials with leading airlines across a variety of aircraft confirmed the ramp’s performance as a universal solution. Unlike traditional equipment tailored to individual aircraft types, the new ramp offers a portable, adaptable option that supports both passenger independence and operational reliability.
A Partnership for Accessibility
Samantha Saunders, Head of Assisted Services at ABM UK & Ireland, said the partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change:
“This project is a shining example of what happens when two organisations collaborate with one goal in mind: creating practical, innovative solutions that transform the passenger journey. By working with Portaramp to develop a universal, portable ramp solution, we’re able to deliver a dignified experience for passengers with reduced mobility, while also improving safety and operational efficiency.”
For Portaramp, the project represents a strategic move into a new sector. “This collaboration marks an important expansion into aviation, building on our 25 years of experience in accessibility solutions for global rail networks,” said Louis Parfett, Account Manager at Portaramp UK Ltd. “Together, we’ve developed a bespoke solution that ensures passengers with reduced mobility can board safely and with confidence. It’s a fantastic example of how collaboration and innovation can make a tangible difference in busy airport environments.”
Reinforcing a Track Record
The ramp launch comes as ABM’s Assisted Services team at Manchester Airport retained a ‘good’ rating in the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s accessibility report, which commended the airport for providing “high quality, timely assistance” to passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.
With a workforce of 15,000 across the UK and Ireland, ABM has long been recognised for its focus on inclusive travel solutions. The introduction of this universal ramp further reinforces its reputation as a leader in assisted services, while giving Portaramp a significant foothold in the aviation sector.
By bridging rail expertise with aviation needs, the initiative delivers more than a product—it represents a new benchmark in accessible air travel, ensuring safety, dignity, and independence remain central to the passenger experience.
