FedEx has announced plans to develop a new fully automated integrated air cargo hub at GMR Cargo City at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, as the express operator expands its infrastructure and capacity in India.

The proposed facility will cover approximately 230,000 sq ft and represents a long-term investment of around US$150 million by FedEx. It will combine international gateway and pickup-and-delivery operations under one roof, with the aim of improving processing efficiency and accelerating shipment flows through the Delhi gateway.

Once operational, the hub is designed to increase FedEx’s processing capacity in Delhi from around 600 to 5,000 packages per hour, with additional scope to increase capacity as volumes grow.

The facility will incorporate an automated sorting system, next-generation X-ray equipment, enhanced security infrastructure and intelligent package-handling technologies. FedEx said these systems will improve shipment processing, strengthen network resilience and enhance service reliability for customers.

Kami Viswanathan, president of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA), said India is a critical market within the company’s global network, with northern and eastern India playing an increasingly important role in the country’s trade and economic growth.

“Strengthening our presence in Delhi will enhance connectivity across these markets and support businesses as they grow and expand,” Viswanathan said. “It reflects our long-term confidence in India and our commitment to investing in the capacity and capabilities needed to support the country’s evolving trade needs.”

The development forms part of GMR Cargo City, a 50-acre integrated cargo and logistics development at Delhi Airport. The project has the potential to deliver approximately 1.5 million to 2 million sq ft of cargo and logistics infrastructure.

Phase 1 is planned to comprise approximately 1 million sq ft across nearly 30 acres. According to FedEx, detailed design work for the first phase has been completed, enabling works have commenced and construction is expected to begin shortly.

Rajesh Arora, president and chief executive – commercial and growth at GMR Airports, said FedEx’s decision to establish its integrated hub at GMR Cargo City demonstrates the growing importance of Delhi as an international logistics gateway.

He said the development would bring together infrastructure, technology and logistics operators within a single cargo ecosystem, helping improve connectivity between businesses in northern and eastern India and international markets.

The investment comes as India’s express logistics and e-commerce sectors continue to expand, increasing demand for automated cargo handling and international air freight capacity.

For FedEx, the Delhi project will provide additional processing capability at one of its key Indian gateways while integrating gateway and last-mile operations within the same facility. The company has also been investing in its wider Indian network, including improvements to shipment-handling infrastructure and facilities supporting customs clearance.

The new hub is expected to strengthen FedEx’s ability to serve businesses across North and East India and connect them with its international network, while supporting the continued growth of India’s role in global trade.
