Malaysia Airlines and China Southern Airlines are expanding their codeshare partnership to five additional routes between Malaysia and China, further broadening connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and major Chinese markets.
The expanded agreement will take effect on October 25, 2026, covering Kuala Lumpur-related services operated by the two airlines and adding Shenzhen, Changsha, Xiamen, Chengdu and Zhengzhou to the codeshare network.
Under the arrangement, the two carriers will place their respective flight codes on eligible services operated by either airline, allowing customers to access a broader range of connections across their combined networks.
The latest expansion brings the number of Kuala Lumpur-linked China routes covered by the codeshare to eight, including Guangzhou, Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong, Shenzhen, Changsha, Xiamen, Chengdu Tianfu and Zhengzhou. The agreement also covers the Guangzhou-Penang route.
The partnership was initially launched in July 2023 on the Kuala Lumpur-Guangzhou route. In July 2024, the airlines expanded the arrangement to include Kuala Lumpur-Beijing Daxing, Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai Pudong and Guangzhou-Penang.
The latest expansion follows network growth by both carriers in the Malaysia-China market. Malaysia Airlines has introduced services from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu, Shenzhen and Changsha, while China Southern has increased capacity on its Kuala Lumpur-Guangzhou and Kuala Lumpur-Shenzhen services, according to Malaysia Airlines.
Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, president and group chief executive officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, said the expanded cooperation would provide customers with greater access to destinations across China while strengthening connectivity between the two airlines’ networks.
“China remains a key strategic market for Malaysia Airlines, and our continued expansion in the country reflects the importance we place on strengthening our connections with the region,” he said.
Nasaruddin added that the partnership was intended to support the continued development of tourism, trade and business links between Malaysia and China.
Han Wensheng, president of China Southern Air Holding Company Limited, said the airline sees further growth potential in the Malaysian market.
He said cooperation with Malaysia Airlines would allow the carriers to leverage their respective networks, increase connectivity between China and Malaysia and provide passengers with additional travel options.
The partnership also reflects the two airlines’ broader efforts to strengthen commercial and tourism links between the two countries, according to China Southern.
The latest codeshare expansion adds to Malaysia Airlines’ wider China network strategy. The carrier has previously said China remains a key component of its international network and has been increasing capacity to Chinese destinations.
For the air transport market, the expanded codeshare gives the two carriers a broader framework for connecting their respective hubs and networks, while providing additional distribution and connection opportunities across the Malaysia-China corridor.
