Open Logistics Foundation Seeks Industry Partners to Pilot Time Slot Management API
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Open Logistics Foundation (OLF) is inviting logistics companies and technology providers to participate in a pilot programme testing an open, vendor-neutral application programming interface (API) designed to improve interoperability in time slot management and reduce inefficiencies at loading bays.

The initiative aims to address persistent challenges in coordinating delivery appointments between warehouse operators, freight forwarders, carriers and logistics technology providers. Despite increasing digitalisation across the supply chain, time slot booking processes often remain fragmented across proprietary platforms, manual communications and incompatible software systems.

These limitations can lead to long vehicle waiting times, congestion around loading bays and avoidable administrative work. The Foundation’s proposed interface is intended to provide a common basis for exchanging appointment and transport information between different logistics systems.

Warehouse operators typically require predictable arrival schedules to coordinate labour, loading equipment and dock capacity. Freight forwarders and carriers, meanwhile, need flexibility to accommodate changing transport conditions and delivery schedules. The Foundation aims to facilitate coordination between these competing operational requirements through standardised data exchange.

“This is a prime example of a problem that can only be solved at industry level. For digital processes to work across company boundaries, a common foundation and open standards are essential,” said Nathalie Böhning, innovation and project manager at the Open Logistics Foundation.

Open API Targets Cross-System Interoperability

The API is designed to support information exchange between transport management systems (TMS), time slot management (TSM) platforms and warehouse management systems (WMS).

By providing a shared technical interface, the initiative seeks to reduce the need for individually developed integrations between logistics partners. This could simplify the coordination of delivery appointments across different platforms and improve the visibility of planned arrivals and available loading capacity.

The interface is available as open-source software through the Open Logistics Foundation’s repository, allowing organisations to examine and implement the specification without relying on a single technology provider.

Transporeon and TradeLink have already implemented the API, providing a basis for initial testing scenarios. Gerry Daalhuisen, senior director of dock, yard and fleet products at Transporeon, and David Bauske, principal software architect at TradeLink, lead the Time Slot Management project within the Foundation’s Working Group Track & Trace.

The Foundation is now seeking additional participants to assess the interface under operational conditions and help determine how well it meets the needs of different businesses and supply chain configurations.

Pilot Programme Opens to Logistics and Technology Providers

The proposed pilot programme is open to organisations involved in transport appointment booking and time slot management. Potential participants include shippers, freight forwarders, carriers, warehouse operators, yard managers and providers of TMS, TSM and WMS solutions.

Testing arrangements can range from a direct connection between a carrier and a time slot management platform to more complex integrations involving several organisations and software systems across a transport network.

Participants will be able to evaluate how standardised data exchange could improve integration with existing systems, reduce the burden of maintaining multiple interfaces and streamline coordination between logistics partners.

The Foundation also intends to use feedback from the pilot participants to refine the API and ensure that its development reflects practical operational requirements.

For companies already investing in digital logistics platforms, the initiative offers an opportunity to explore interoperability without replacing their existing systems. The objective is to enable different solutions to exchange relevant information through a common interface rather than requiring businesses to operate within a single proprietary ecosystem.

Industry Collaboration Central to Development

The success of an open standard depends not only on its technical design but also on its adoption across the logistics industry. Broad participation will therefore be important in identifying integration challenges, validating the interface and establishing whether it can support different operating models.

By involving both logistics operators and software providers, the Open Logistics Foundation aims to test the API across a range of real-world scenarios before further development and wider adoption.

More effective time slot management could help businesses coordinate arrivals more accurately, make better use of loading dock capacity and reduce unnecessary vehicle waiting. However, the extent of these benefits will depend on implementation quality, data availability and the willingness of supply chain partners to adopt compatible processes.

The pilot represents a further step towards more interoperable digital logistics, where standardised information exchange can support collaboration between companies without requiring them to abandon their existing technology platforms.
