The Shannon Group has applied for planning permission to develop an air cargo hub and distribution facility at Shannon Airport.

However, the airport authority has refused to confirm or deny if the development is related to discussions with Amazon to establish an e-commerce distribution and delivery base at Shannon.

According to the planning application, the 29,116 sq ft distribution facility and 3,606 sq ft of office space will have direct access to the airport apron.

A Shannon Group spokesperson said: “The upgrade of our cargo facilities is part of our overall plans to enhance the facilities Shannon has to offer to cargo operators using the airport.”

The spokesperson added the facility formed part of its development strategy which has seen it invest over €150 million across its campus to provide facilities for both Irish and foreign firms.
