Airbus unveils A350F test aircraft in parcel-inspired livery

Airbus has unveiled the distinctive livery of the first A350F test aircraft, with the new-generation freighter painted to resemble a large parcel as the programme moves closer to its maiden flight.

The aircraft, registered F-WXLD (MSN700), features the winning design from Airbus’ A350F livery competition. The competition, launched in 2022, attracted more than 4,000 entries, with Airbus ultimately combining two similar submissions to create the final design.

Airbus described the livery as reflecting the mission of its “new-generation freighter” to transform air cargo operations.

The unveiling comes as the A350F approaches the flight-test phase. Airbus is understood to be targeting the aircraft’s maiden flight for late September, although the timing could move into early October depending on technical readiness and weather conditions, according to industry sources cited by Reuters.

Airbus has maintained that the maiden flight is expected later this year, with first delivery planned for the second half of 2027.

The manufacturer is developing the A350F to compete in the large-freighter segment, where it will face established aircraft such as Boeing’s 777 freighter family. Airbus has positioned the aircraft as a clean-sheet freighter based on the A350 platform, with a focus on payload capability, fuel efficiency and loading flexibility.

The A350F will have a maximum payload of up to 111 tonnes and a range of up to 8,700 km. Its main deck cargo door, measuring 4.3 metres wide, is the largest in the industry and is designed to facilitate the handling of oversized and heavy cargo.

Airbus says the aircraft will deliver significantly lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions than previous-generation freighters, while its extensive use of advanced materials contributes to a lower structural weight. The aircraft will also be capable of operating with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel at entry into service, according to Airbus.

The test programme is centred on MSN700, with Airbus also having built a second A350F test aircraft. Airbus’ own A350F programme materials identify MSN700 as part of the ongoing test campaign.

The aircraft is also becoming an increasingly important part of Airbus’ strategy to establish a stronger position in the large-freighter market. Demand for the type has continued to build, with airlines including Cathay Cargo, Air China Cargo, Korean Air and Silk Way West Airlines among its customers. Cathay, for example, added two A350Fs to its order in May, taking its total commitment to eight aircraft.

Airbus is targeting certification of the A350F ahead of the planned 2027 entry into service. The programme will be closely watched by cargo operators as the industry prepares for the replacement of ageing widebody freighter fleets and faces growing pressure to improve fuel efficiency and emissions performance.

The parcel-themed aircraft therefore arrives at a significant point in the programme: with flight testing approaching, Airbus is moving the A350F from development into the final stages before certification and customer deliveries.
