Liege Airport (LGG) has further solidified its status as a premier European air cargo hub with the announcement that global logistics powerhouse Kuehne+Nagel will expand its operations at the airport, supported by long-time aviation logistics partner Atlas Air Worldwide.
The expansion marks a significant step in Kuehne+Nagel’s air logistics growth strategy, leveraging Liege’s operational efficiency, direct airside access, and 24/7 capabilities to enhance service delivery across key industries. Central to the new phase is the deployment of Boeing 747-8F freighters, including the prominently branded “Inspire” (N862GT), one of the most advanced aircraft in the Atlas fleet. With a payload capacity exceeding 140 metric tons and a range of over 8,000 kilometers, the aircraft is well-suited for long-haul, heavy cargo missions.
Liege Airport’s cargo-centric infrastructure and first-line airside warehouses have long made it a go-to for freight operators. The latest move by Kuehne+Nagel—already a key player at LGG—will see a scaling of services that span express, charter, consolidation, and temperature-controlled solutions. These offerings are seamlessly integrated with the company’s digital visibility tools, ensuring full end-to-end tracking and control.
“With this expansion, Kuehne+Nagel reaffirms its commitment to delivering high-performance air freight solutions from a location that meets the demands of our most time-critical shipments,” said Jens Ludwig, Vice President Global Air Logistics Own-Controlled Network & Charter at Kuehne+Nagel. “Liege is a strategic asset in our European network, and Atlas Air’s continued support strengthens our ability to provide premium, around-the-clock services.”
Atlas Air, which operates the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighters, has expanded its footprint at LGG alongside this development. The New York-headquartered cargo carrier has a longstanding relationship with Kuehne+Nagel, executing dedicated charters and customized airlift programs across the globe.
“Supporting Kuehne+Nagel’s expansion in Liege reflects our joint ambition to lead in global air logistics,” said Michael Steen, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Worldwide. “LGG is a key strategic platform in Europe, and we are proud to contribute reliable, efficient capacity that underpins this important partnership.”
Liege Airport CEO Laurent Jossart echoed the sentiment: “This announcement demonstrates the continued confidence placed in Liege Airport by leading industry players. We are proud to support Kuehne+Nagel and Atlas Air as they enhance global connectivity and logistics excellence from our hub.”
The expansion comes at a time when resilient, agile supply chains are critical to industries such as pharmaceuticals, perishables, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing—sectors where Kuehne+Nagel holds deep expertise. Operating across more than 1,300 sites in nearly 100 countries, the company’s robust carrier partnerships and commitment to sustainability remain key differentiators.
Liege Airport’s growing appeal as a European logistics stronghold is underpinned by investments in infrastructure and its 24/7 uncongested operations—offering an increasingly attractive alternative to more congested major European hubs.
