Lufthansa Cargo has successfully transported a fully restored 1972 BMW from Prague to Tokyo, where the rare vehicle will compete in the Islands of Japan Marathon—a 7,000-kilometre rally across Japan celebrating automotive history.
The model, produced in a limited run of just 2,999 units, is considered a prized collector’s item. Experts estimate that only 150 to 300 remain in running condition across Europe today. Painstakingly restored by a private owner, the car embodies a rare piece of motorsport heritage.

The journey began in Prague (PRG), with a stopover in Frankfurt (FRA), before arriving in Tokyo (NRT). Lufthansa Cargo, renowned for its precision in automotive logistics, ensured the safe handling of the vehicle from start to finish. The carrier regularly manages the transport of serial production parts, prototypes, and classic collector’s cars, reinforcing its reputation for reliability and care in this specialized sector.
“This isn’t just any vintage car—it’s a jewel of motorsport history,” said Lufthansa Cargo. “We are proud to be entrusted with such a unique piece and grateful to our partners NX Group (Nippon Express Group) as well as our colleagues Jiří Kareš and Martina Smolková for their contribution to this project.”
The 1972 BMW will now line up at the rally’s starting point in Sapporo, joining enthusiasts from around the world in a celebration of engineering, endurance, and legacy.
