In a meticulously coordinated operation that underscored Malaysia’s commitment to global conservation partnerships, MASkargo successfully transported two new giant pandas—Chen Xing and Xiao Yue—from Sichuan, China, to Kuala Lumpur on 18 November. The mission, regarded as one of the carrier’s most significant special-cargo undertakings, highlighted MASkargo’s deep expertise in managing sensitive, high-value, and high-welfare cargo.
The pandas’ journey began at the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda, where animal specialists, veterinarians, and logistics teams prepared the pair for travel under strict international handling requirements. The operation demanded precise timing, seamless coordination, and dedicated monitoring to ensure the pandas’ safety and comfort throughout the multi-hour transboundary flight.
A Showcase of Operational Precision
MASkargo deployed a highly trained team specialising in live-animal transport, including handlers experienced in managing delicate and endangered species. The aircraft was configured to maintain optimised temperature, airflow, and noise levels, ensuring a stress-free environment for Chen Xing and Xiao Yue. Their custom-designed transport crates were secured and monitored throughout the flight, with welfare checks conducted at regular intervals.
Ground operations were equally tightly orchestrated. From tarmac handling to clearance procedures at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), MASkargo adhered to IATA’s Live Animals Regulations (LAR), widely considered the global benchmark for humane animal transport. Every stage of the operation—from cargo acceptance in Sichuan to offloading in Kuala Lumpur—was supported by continuous communication between MASkargo’s operations centre, ramp teams, veterinary specialists, and Chinese and Malaysian conservation authorities.

A Ceremonial Welcome Reflecting Deep Bilateral Ties
Upon arrival at KLIA, the aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute—an aviation tradition reserved for momentous occasions—symbolising both Malaysia’s warm welcome for the new arrivals and MASkargo’s pride in executing a mission of national significance.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished delegation, including the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, senior officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), leaders from Zoo Negara, government agencies, and conservation groups. Their presence highlighted the deepening Malaysia-China cooperation under the renewed 10-year Giant Panda Conservation Agreement, a programme aimed at fostering international research collaboration, wildlife conservation, and cultural exchange.
Seamless Handover and Next Steps in Panda Diplomacy
Immediately after touchdown, Chen Xing and Xiao Yue were transferred to the Giant Panda Conservation Centre at Zoo Negara, where they underwent a medical examination before beginning their mandatory one-month quarantine. During this period, veterinarians and panda-care specialists will monitor their adaptation to their new environment and prepare them for public introduction.
The pandas bring with them distinct personalities—Chen Xing known for his lively, playful nature, and Xiao Yue for her gentle and calm disposition—promising to deepen public interest and engagement in Malaysia’s conservation initiatives.
Reinforcing MASkargo’s Leadership in Specialised Cargo Logistics
For MASkargo, the mission exemplifies its growing reputation as a carrier capable of executing complex, high-welfare cargo movements requiring precision, compliance, and international coordination. Over the years, MASkargo has handled an array of special-cargo assignments, including endangered animals, pharmaceutical shipments, humanitarian goods, and oversized equipment. The panda mission further solidifies its role as a trusted partner for government agencies, conservation bodies, and global logistics stakeholders.
The successful transport of Chen Xing and Xiao Yue not only marks a new milestone in Malaysia’s panda diplomacy but also underscores MASkargo’s commitment to supporting national and international conservation objectives while strengthening its leadership in the specialised air cargo sector.
