Prestwick, UK, Feb. 10, 2025 – Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) has successfully offloaded its longest-ever cargo, a major achievement that highlights the airport’s growing capabilities in handling outsized freight. The shipment, part of an oil and gas consignment, was flown in from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and will be forwarded to Aberdeen.
Weighing 24 tonnes and measuring 67 feet in length, the cargo was delivered on three 20-foot connecting pallets, requiring the use of multiple cranes and loaders. Despite the complexity, the operation was completed in just 30 minutes, thanks to the airport’s investment in new equipment and infrastructure.
Jules Matteoni, Operations Director at PIK, praised the team for their precision and skill in executing the offload. “This operation required meticulous planning and teamwork, and our ground handling team rose to the challenge,” he said.
The successful handling of this cargo was made possible by the airport’s recent infrastructure upgrades, including high-capacity loaders and a range of other specialized equipment. Nico Le Roux, Business Development Director at PIK, emphasized the importance of these investments. “Our new equipment has enhanced our ability to handle complex and outsized shipments efficiently,” he said.
As part of its commitment to expanding its cargo capabilities, Prestwick also introduced a heavy-duty pushback tractor, new dollies, and cold storage facilities capable of handling a wide range of temperature-sensitive goods.
“We are proud of our role in supporting industries like oil and gas, and this operation is a testament to our ongoing investment in the airport’s infrastructure,” Le Roux added.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport continues to expand its cargo operations, providing tailored solutions for clients in sectors that demand specialized handling.
