Qatar Airways Deploys Next-Generation SD-WAN Network Across Global Operations

Qatar Airways has completed a major digital infrastructure upgrade in partnership with SITA, rolling out next-generation SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) technology across more than 350 international outstations and multiple global data centres. The initiative marks the first widescale SD-WAN deployment undertaken by a major international airline with SITA, signalling a decisive shift toward software-driven, high-resilience networks across the aviation sector.

The transformation replaces legacy, hardware-bound connectivity with a dynamic, software-based system capable of intelligently routing data through MPLS, broadband, dedicated internet, and LTE/5G connections. By selecting the optimal path in real time, the SD-WAN platform delivers faster processing speeds, reduced latency, and enhanced stability across high-demand airline operations.

For passengers, the upgrade means smoother digital interactions, faster transaction times, and consistently connected services across the airline’s global network.

The rollout addresses long-standing challenges associated with bandwidth limitations and network congestion, ensuring mission-critical applications—such as departure control, baggage reconciliation, and cargo management—receive priority routing. Qatar Airways’ extensive global footprint, spanning 172 destinations and operating 250 aircraft, will now be supported by a modernised digital backbone designed for high-performance, scalable growth.

Cybersecurity has been strengthened as part of the deployment. The managed SD-WAN infrastructure incorporates multilayered protection such as encrypted channels, strict identity and access controls, and a zero-trust framework that verifies every user and device. This significantly reduces operational risks and enhances resilience against evolving cyber threats.

“As airlines worldwide deal with surging data volumes, stricter cybersecurity requirements, and ageing legacy networks, SD-WAN is emerging as a transformative solution,” said Selim Bouri, President – Middle East & Africa at SITA. “This deployment with Qatar Airways showcases how next-generation networks can unlock higher levels of efficiency, operational continuity, and customer experience.”

Suhail Kadri, Chief Information Officer at Qatar Airways, emphasised the upgrade as central to the airline’s digital vision. “We have always been committed to adopting innovations that enhance operational strength and elevate passenger experience. Our collaboration with SITA reflects that commitment. Together, we are building an agile, secure, and future-ready network that supports our global growth ambitions.”

The successful deployment positions Qatar Airways as a leader in aviation digital transformation, setting a new industry benchmark for how large airlines integrate adaptive, cloud-enabled networking technologies to support global operations and next-generation passenger experiences.
