Brussels Airport, in partnership with ConnexEurope, has inaugurated a new logistics building within its cargo zone, marking a significant step in enhancing infrastructure to support multimodal freight operations between Europe and Africa.

The newly opened facility will serve as ConnexEurope’s Belgian headquarters and a central hub for its expanding European activities. The company, previously operating under the name Comexas, has maintained a long-standing presence at Brussels Airport since the 1990s, specialising in integrated logistics solutions including air freight, ocean freight, customs services, and inland transport—particularly focused on African trade lanes.

Modern Infrastructure to Support Growth

Developed by Brussels Airport, the site comprises approximately 3,400 square metres of warehouse space and 500 square metres of office facilities. The design enables the consolidation of ConnexEurope’s Belgian operations under one roof, improving coordination across various logistics functions and transport modes.

The centralised setup is expected to streamline day-to-day operations, enhance shipment visibility, and improve efficiency in handling complex cargo flows, including project logistics and time-sensitive freight.

Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability was a core consideration in the development of the new building, which has achieved BREEAM Excellent certification. This reflects high standards in energy efficiency, environmental performance, and sustainable construction practices.

The project aligns with Brussels Airport’s broader strategy to modernise its cargo infrastructure while reducing environmental impact, as airports and logistics providers increasingly invest in greener, future-ready facilities.

Strengthening Europe–Africa Logistics Connectivity

From its new Brussels hub, ConnexEurope manages a diverse portfolio of logistics services, including air freight via passenger aircraft, dedicated freighters, and charter operations, as well as ocean freight solutions. The company also handles specialised cargo such as perishables and complex project shipments, with a strong focus on supporting industries such as mining across African markets.

The consolidation of operations is expected to enhance the company’s ability to manage multi-modal supply chains more efficiently, particularly in high-complexity trade corridors linking Europe with Africa.

Strategic Expansion and Workforce Growth

The launch of the new facility coincides with the company’s rebranding to ConnexEurope, signalling a new phase of growth and expansion. The organisation currently employs around 25 staff at Brussels Airport and has indicated plans to expand its workforce as operations scale up.

Industry stakeholders highlight that investments in modern, centralised logistics hubs are critical to maintaining competitiveness in global supply chains, particularly as demand grows for integrated, end-to-end solutions.

Enhancing Brussels Airport’s Cargo Ecosystem

For Brussels Airport, the development reinforces its position as a key European cargo gateway, particularly for specialised freight segments such as pharmaceuticals, perishables, and project cargo. By supporting infrastructure projects like this, the airport continues to strengthen its cargo community and expand its role in global logistics networks.

The new ConnexEurope facility is expected to contribute to a more connected and efficient cargo ecosystem at the airport, supporting long-term growth and improving connectivity between Europe and emerging markets.
