Frankfurt Cargo Services has officially opened a new CEIV- and GDP-certified Pharma Center at Frankfurt Airport, significantly expanding its pharmaceutical logistics capabilities and reinforcing Frankfurt’s position as one of Europe’s leading air cargo hubs for temperature-sensitive healthcare shipments.
The new facility, inaugurated on May 12 in the presence of more than 100 guests and industry stakeholders, represents a major investment in specialised pharmaceutical handling infrastructure. Following nearly two years of construction carried out alongside ongoing operations, the project has enabled Frankfurt Cargo Services (FCS) to quadruple its temperature-controlled cargo handling capacity.
The newly opened Pharma Center centralises all pharmaceutical cargo handling operations within a dedicated 3,300 square metre facility, streamlining processes and reducing the risk of temperature deviations during cargo transfer and storage.
Expanding Capacity for Pharmaceutical Air Cargo
The facility has been designed to support the growing global demand for pharmaceutical logistics services, one of the fastest-expanding segments within the air cargo industry.
With healthcare supply chains becoming increasingly reliant on temperature-controlled transportation, airports and cargo handlers worldwide are investing heavily in specialised infrastructure capable of maintaining strict compliance standards for sensitive pharmaceutical products, vaccines and biologics.
FCS said the new Pharma Center enables all stages of pharmaceutical cargo processing — including receiving, dispatching, storage, pallet breakdown and pallet assembly — to take place entirely within controlled environments.
By consolidating operations into a single integrated facility, the company has significantly reduced internal cargo movement distances and eliminated transit exposure to uncontrolled ambient conditions during handling processes.
The Pharma Center also includes dedicated areas for accepting loose freight directly into temperature-controlled storage zones, alongside infrastructure allowing temperature-controlled pallet assembly and storage of active loading units (ULDs) equipped with powered cooling systems.
Designated storage areas with appropriate electrical power supply have been installed to support active temperature-controlled containers used extensively within pharmaceutical and biotech logistics operations.
Supporting Multiple Temperature Ranges
The new facility supports both Controlled Room Temperature (CRT) and Controlled Cool Storage (COL) cargo categories, enabling FCS to manage a broad range of pharmaceutical and healthcare products.
CRT handling supports shipments requiring temperatures between 15°C and 25°C, commonly used for many pharmaceutical products and medical supplies.
The COL segment provides storage conditions between 2°C and 8°C, critical for temperature-sensitive medicines, vaccines, biologics and specialty healthcare products requiring strict cold chain compliance.
Industry analysts note that demand for dedicated pharmaceutical air cargo infrastructure continues to rise globally as healthcare manufacturers increasingly depend on reliable and validated cold chain logistics networks.
Frankfurt Airport has emerged as one of Europe’s key pharmaceutical cargo gateways due to its central geographic location, extensive airline connectivity and advanced logistics ecosystem.
Strengthening Frankfurt’s Role as a Pharma Logistics Hub
The opening of the new Pharma Center further strengthens Frankfurt Airport’s position within the global pharmaceutical supply chain network.
Germany remains one of Europe’s largest pharmaceutical production and export markets, while Frankfurt Airport serves as a major intercontinental cargo hub connecting Europe with North America, Asia and the Middle East.
The airport’s extensive freighter operations, road feeder services and specialised cargo infrastructure have made it a preferred gateway for time-sensitive and temperature-controlled shipments.
Thomas Schürmann, Managing Director of Frankfurt Cargo Services, said the expansion positions the company to support continued growth within the pharmaceutical logistics sector.
“Pharmaceutical handling is one of the fastest-growing sectors in our industry,” Schürmann stated. “I am pleased that with our new Pharma Center, we now not only provide the optimal conditions to ensure a fully controlled environment at every stage of handling, but are also ideally equipped for further growth thanks to a significantly expanded facility.”
The facility’s CEIV and GDP certifications further reinforce compliance with internationally recognised pharmaceutical handling standards.
The International Air Transport Association’s CEIV Pharma certification validates compliance with stringent air cargo pharmaceutical logistics requirements, while Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certification ensures adherence to European Union standards governing the safe storage and transport of medicinal products.
Growing Demand for Specialised Pharma Infrastructure
The pharmaceutical air cargo market has experienced sustained growth in recent years, driven by expanding biologics production, rising healthcare demand and increased movement of temperature-sensitive therapies globally.
Air cargo remains a critical mode of transport for high-value pharmaceutical products due to speed, reliability and strict temperature management requirements.
Industry experts believe continued investments in specialised healthcare logistics facilities will remain a priority for major cargo hubs as pharmaceutical manufacturers seek resilient, compliant and globally connected supply chain solutions.
The launch of the new Pharma Center positions Frankfurt Cargo Services to capture additional growth opportunities in the healthcare logistics market while enhancing Frankfurt Airport’s competitiveness as a leading pharmaceutical air freight gateway.
