ACIA Aero Leasing has delivered the world’s first ATR 72-600 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft equipped with a Large Cargo Door (LCD) to FedEx, marking a milestone in the development of next-generation regional freighter capacity.
The Ireland-based aircraft lessor announced the delivery on 15 October through its official LinkedIn account. The aircraft, identified by manufacturer serial number (MSN) 1239, is the first ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft to complete conversion to a freighter configuration incorporating the larger cargo door.
ACIA described the delivery as a significant development for the ATR 72-600 platform, adding that MSN 1239 would establish a template for subsequent conversions. The company also highlighted continued demand for modern turboprop freighters serving regional cargo networks.
US-based Empire Aerospace carried out the freighter conversion, including the installation of the Large Cargo Door. Measuring 2.94 metres by 1.8 metres, the door is designed to accommodate larger consignments and palletised freight, providing greater loading flexibility for regional cargo operations.
The programme was initiated by ACIA in 2024, following an earlier postponement attributed to sustained demand for the passenger version of the ATR 72-600. In July 2025, the lessor announced a definitive agreement to sell the first aircraft in the conversion programme to FedEx, identifying the US express carrier as the launch customer. Delivery had initially been scheduled for December 2025.
The handover advances the introduction of the ATR 72-600P2F with a Large Cargo Door into the regional freighter market. The aircraft is intended to support feeder operations, where turboprops play an important role in connecting smaller airports and regional communities with major cargo hubs.
ACIA Aero Leasing, headquartered in Ireland, manages a portfolio of more than 50 regional passenger and freighter aircraft leased to operators in over 23 countries. The company also maintains offices in France, the United Kingdom and South Africa, providing aircraft leasing and related services ranging from dry leasing to charter operations.
The delivery to FedEx represents the first completed aircraft under the ATR 72-600 Large Cargo Door conversion programme and establishes a reference point for potential future conversions.
