Air Europa Cargo has reinforced its long-standing operational alliance with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, through a five-year renewal of their cargo handling agreement covering Madrid and Barcelona. The extension underscores the airline’s commitment to strengthening its logistics infrastructure across two of Spain’s most critical aviation hubs, supporting both European and long-haul cargo flows.

The renewed contract builds on a partnership that began in Madrid in 2018 and expanded to Barcelona in early 2021. Over the years, the collaboration has evolved into a cornerstone of Air Europa Cargo’s ground operations strategy, enabling the airline to scale capacity while maintaining high standards of efficiency and service delivery.

At Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, WFS currently oversees cargo handling for up to 350 weekly Air Europa flights. These operations span domestic routes within Spain, major European destinations, and long-haul services connecting to North and South America. In Barcelona, the handler supports more than 25 weekly flights, ensuring seamless cargo movement across the airline’s network. The operations are aligned with Air Europa’s mixed fleet of Boeing 737 and Boeing 787 aircraft, which serve both short- and long-haul markets.

Jordi Piqué, General Manager of Air Europa Cargo, emphasized that the renewed agreement aligns closely with the airline’s long-term growth and modernization objectives. He highlighted the importance of working with a partner capable of integrating advanced technological solutions while continuously refining operational processes.

According to Piqué, the collaboration has consistently focused on enhancing efficiency, safety, and service quality—key pillars in an increasingly competitive global cargo market. The extension of the agreement is expected to further consolidate Air Europa Cargo’s position across transatlantic and intra-European trade lanes.

From WFS’s perspective, the renewal reflects confidence in its operational capabilities and ongoing investments in Spain. Humberto Castro, Managing Director for Spain and Italy, reiterated the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and infrastructure development as central to supporting airline partners.

WFS maintains a significant footprint in Madrid, operating five cargo warehouse facilities with a combined surface area of approximately 17,000 square meters. These facilities handle more than 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually for over 30 airline customers. Looking ahead, the company is set to expand further, having secured approval from airport authority AENA to develop a sixth cargo facility, scheduled to become operational in 2028.

In Barcelona, WFS manages a 12,000 square meter cargo terminal, handling upwards of 140,000 tonnes annually and serving more than 20 airlines. The continued investment in infrastructure and technology at both locations is expected to enhance throughput capacity, optimize handling efficiency, and support evolving customer demands.

The renewed agreement positions both companies to capitalize on sustained growth in global air cargo demand, while reinforcing Madrid and Barcelona as key logistics gateways linking Europe with the Americas.
