Doncaster Sheffield Airport Public Ownership Deal Moves Closer to Approval
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A proposed deal to bring Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) and its adjacent Innovation Quarter employment land into public ownership has been agreed, marking a significant step towards reopening the airport and restoring its role in the UK’s regional aviation and logistics network.

The proposed acquisition by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) follows negotiations with Peel Land and the City of Doncaster Council. It remains subject to formal consideration by the council and approval by the SYMCA Board, scheduled for 27 October 2026, as well as the relevant approval from Peel Land.

If approved, the transaction would give SYMCA ownership of the airport freehold and the surrounding employment land, providing a new governance and investment framework for the site’s planned redevelopment.

Freight operations targeted for 2027

The reopening programme includes a phased return of aviation activity. Freight services are planned to resume from autumn 2027, with passenger operations targeted for spring 2028. Both timelines remain dependent on the completion of regulatory, infrastructure and operational requirements.

The airport closed in November 2022, creating a gap in commercial aviation provision for South Yorkshire. Since then, the regional authority and Doncaster Council have worked to develop a reopening plan and establish the arrangements needed to bring the site back into operation.

Preparatory work has included recruiting senior aviation personnel, progressing airspace change and certification requirements, and planning the procurement of essential systems and equipment, including fire tenders and a new radar system.

Airport City ambitions

The acquisition forms part of the wider South Yorkshire Airport City vision, which aims to combine aviation with advanced manufacturing, sustainable aviation technology and innovation. The adjacent Innovation Quarter is intended to support employment and business development linked to the airport and the wider regional economy.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said the proposed deal would give the region greater control over the airport’s future and create a platform for long-term investment. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones described reopening the airport as a priority, highlighting the work undertaken on airfield readiness, regulatory preparations and engagement with prospective airlines and service providers.

Airport operations director Simon Hinchley also welcomed the proposed change in ownership, saying it could provide greater certainty for suppliers, partners and customers making longer-term investment decisions.

Public investment and remaining approvals

The proposed purchase is part of a wider publicly backed reopening programme. However, the project carries financial risks for taxpayers, and the authority’s decision-making process will need to weigh the expected regional economic benefits against the cost and delivery challenges.

Under the proposed arrangements, SYMCA would become the freehold owner, while the existing lease and operating structure would be addressed through transitional legal and governance arrangements involving Doncaster Council and its airport operating company.

The next formal decisions are expected from Doncaster Council and the SYMCA Board. Until those approvals and the necessary agreements are completed, the acquisition remains a proposal rather than a concluded transfer of ownership.

For the air cargo sector, the planned return of freight services from autumn 2027 offers a potential additional gateway for regional logistics. The extent of the airport’s future cargo role will depend on operational readiness, regulatory approvals and the development of commercial relationships with freight operators and customers.
