New Boeing 767 cargo route strengthens Europe–South America connectivity and delivers dedicated logistics capacity to one of the world’s most important mining regions

LATAM Cargo Chile has expanded its international cargo network with the launch of a new direct freighter service connecting Frankfurt, Germany, with Antofagasta in northern Chile, a strategic move aimed at enhancing supply chain efficiency for the region’s thriving mining sector.

The weekly service, which commenced operations on May 23, is operated using a Boeing 767 freighter and provides 25 tonnes of dedicated cargo capacity between Frankfurt Airport and Andrés Sabella Airport in Antofagasta. The route marks a significant milestone in LATAM Cargo’s efforts to strengthen logistics connectivity between Europe and South America while supporting industries that depend on reliable and time-sensitive transportation solutions.

Dedicated Support for Chile’s Mining Heartland

Antofagasta is widely recognized as the center of Chile’s mining industry and plays a critical role in the global production of copper and other mineral resources. The region hosts some of the world’s largest mining operations, generating continuous demand for specialized machinery, equipment, spare parts and industrial components sourced from international suppliers.

The new Frankfurt–Antofagasta service has been specifically designed to address these requirements by providing a direct logistics corridor between Europe and northern Chile. The route primarily transports machinery components and replacement parts essential to maintaining mining operations, helping reduce supply chain disruptions and equipment downtime.

Previously, cargo destined for northern Chile often transited through Santiago before being forwarded by domestic air services or ground transportation. The introduction of a direct service eliminates the need for additional connections, significantly improving transit times and enhancing operational efficiency for customers.

According to LATAM Cargo, the new route offers mining companies and industrial customers greater supply chain reliability while reducing the complexity associated with multimodal transportation.

Strengthening Strategic Europe–South America Trade Links

The launch forms part of LATAM Cargo’s broader strategy to strengthen intercontinental cargo corridors through dedicated freighter operations and enhanced network connectivity.

Frankfurt remains one of Europe’s most important logistics gateways, serving as a major hub for industrial manufacturing, engineering products and international trade. By connecting Frankfurt directly with Antofagasta, LATAM Cargo is creating a streamlined logistics solution for European suppliers serving the mining and industrial sectors across northern Chile.

Jorge Carretero, Sales Manager Europe at LATAM Cargo, emphasized the strategic importance of the new service and its role in supporting customer supply chains.

He noted that northern Chile is home to major mining and industrial projects that require highly precise and dependable logistics solutions. By offering direct access from one of Europe’s most significant cargo hubs, the airline is helping customers reduce transit times while improving supply chain efficiency and reliability.

The route also strengthens LATAM Cargo’s position as a key logistics partner for industries requiring specialized transportation solutions across Latin America.

Expanding Capacity for High-Value Industrial Cargo

The introduction of the Antofagasta service highlights the growing importance of dedicated freighter capacity in supporting industrial supply chains. Mining operations often rely on the rapid delivery of critical spare parts and specialized equipment, where delays can have significant operational and financial consequences.

By offering a weekly Boeing 767 freighter service, LATAM Cargo provides customers with predictable schedules and dedicated cargo space tailored to the needs of high-value industrial shipments.

The service also reflects broader trends within the air cargo industry, where carriers are increasingly developing specialized logistics solutions to support key economic sectors and regional industries.

Enhancing LATAM Cargo’s Chilean Network

The new route complements LATAM Cargo’s extensive domestic and international operations across Chile.

Internationally, the airline transports major export products including salmon, fresh fruit and other perishables to markets around the world. Within Chile, LATAM Cargo serves northern regions with courier shipments, documents and industrial cargo while supplying southern communities with essential consumer and commercial goods.

The addition of direct connectivity between Frankfurt and Antofagasta further strengthens the carrier’s role in facilitating international trade and supporting Chile’s export-driven economy.

Supporting Regional Economic Growth

As global demand for minerals and industrial raw materials continues to rise, efficient logistics infrastructure remains essential to maintaining the competitiveness of mining operations. The new Frankfurt–Antofagasta route demonstrates how air cargo operators are increasingly tailoring network strategies to meet the specific needs of industrial sectors and regional economies.

By linking one of Europe’s leading cargo hubs directly with Chile’s mining capital, LATAM Cargo is not only expanding its international footprint but also providing a critical logistics solution that supports industrial productivity, trade growth and supply chain resilience.

The launch underscores the airline’s continued commitment to developing specialized cargo services that address evolving customer requirements while strengthening economic connectivity between Europe and Latin America.
