Qantas Freight and Australia Post have taken delivery of the first of three additional Airbus A321 passenger-to-freighter (A321P2F) aircraft, expanding domestic air cargo capacity ahead of Australia’s peak online shopping and holiday delivery season.
The aircraft has arrived at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), marking the latest stage in the companies’ long-standing partnership to support growing demand for fast and reliable parcel deliveries across Australia.
According to Qantas Freight, the three additional aircraft are expected to increase capacity across its dedicated freighter network by up to 20%. Each aircraft can carry as many as 20,000 Australia Post and StarTrack parcels per flight, strengthening the partners’ ability to manage rising volumes during major retail events and the busy Christmas delivery period.
The remaining two A321P2F aircraft are scheduled to join the Qantas Freight fleet by March 2027.
Additional Capacity Ahead of Peak Parcel Season
The arrival comes weeks before Black Friday sales and the Christmas shopping period, when parcel volumes typically increase as consumers purchase goods online and retailers manage higher fulfilment demands.
The new freighters will support overnight and next-day delivery services across Australia, operating through Qantas Freight’s domestic terminal network. This includes the new 24-hour freight terminal at Western Sydney International Airport, where Qantas Freight began regular domestic operations in July 2026.
The additional aircraft are intended to provide greater flexibility across the network, helping the partners manage fluctuations in parcel demand while maintaining delivery schedules for households and businesses.
“Australia’s freight network plays a critical role in connecting businesses and communities across the country. This investment will help us support Australia Post and respond more effectively as demand for fast overnight deliveries continues to grow,” said Igor Kwiatkowski, executive manager of Qantas Freight.
A321P2F Aircraft to Replace Smaller Freighters
The Airbus A321P2F offers greater cargo capacity per flight than the smaller BAe 146-300 freighters previously used on the Australia Post contract.
The transition is expected to improve freight-carrying capability and operational efficiency across the domestic network. The aircraft will help accommodate growing parcel volumes while supporting the movement of freight between major Australian markets.
For postal and e-commerce operators, additional dedicated freighter capacity can improve flexibility during periods of heightened demand, particularly when time-sensitive shipments must move between distribution centres and regional delivery networks.
The aircraft will operate alongside Qantas Freight’s wider fleet and network infrastructure, including the new Western Sydney cargo terminal, which provides round-the-clock operating capability.
Partnership Extended for Another Decade
The fleet expansion follows the extension of the Qantas Freight–Australia Post partnership for a further 10 years, reinforcing a commercial relationship that dates back to 1922, when Qantas carried 106 letters on its first commercial flight.
Under the renewed agreement, the companies will continue supporting the movement of more than 75 million parcels and other freight items annually across domestic and international networks.
“Whether it’s a customer making a purchase from a Black Friday sale or a small business sending orders across the country, Australians expect fast and reliable delivery,” said Mark Davies, Australia Post general manager of linehaul fleet and special services.
He said the additional aircraft would help move more parcels through the network as online shopping grows and major retail events drive higher shipment volumes.
The investment also complements the opening of Western Sydney International Airport’s freight terminal, which is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting Australia’s air cargo and parcel distribution infrastructure.
Strengthening Australia’s Domestic Air Cargo Network
The addition of three A321P2F aircraft highlights the importance of dedicated freighter capacity in supporting the expansion of e-commerce and express delivery services.
By combining additional aircraft with upgraded freight infrastructure and a long-term commercial partnership, Qantas Freight and Australia Post aim to improve network resilience and manage future growth in parcel volumes.
The remaining deliveries, scheduled through March 2027, will complete the planned fleet expansion and provide additional capacity for the partners’ domestic distribution operations.
