In a major step toward strengthening Vietnam’s air logistics sector, SATS Ltd. (SATS) and Vietnam Airlines JSC (VNA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop and operate a state-of-the-art air cargo terminal at the new Long Thanh International Airport (LTIA).
The partnership will not only boost cargo handling capabilities in Vietnam but also explore strategic initiatives to enhance ground and air logistics services across Vietnam Airlines’ international network.
A Game-Changer for Vietnam’s Aviation Sector
Long Thanh International Airport, located 35 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, is being built to relieve congestion at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Set to begin operations in late 2026, the airport’s first phase will accommodate 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. By 2050, it is projected to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in Southeast Asia.
With Vietnam’s growing e-commerce and manufacturing industries, the demand for efficient cargo infrastructure has never been higher. By combining SATS’ global logistics expertise with Vietnam Airlines’ regional presence, this collaboration aims to create a world-class airfreight ecosystem that supports Vietnam’s expanding role in global trade and supply chains.
Beyond Cargo: A Holistic Partnership
Beyond the cargo terminal, SATS and VNA will work together to optimize cargo handling operations across VNA’s international network. The partnership will focus on customized airfreight solutions, including middle-mile and trucking services, leveraging SATS’ technological innovations and global logistics footprint.
By sharing best practices, automation technologies, and operational data, the two companies aim to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and elevate service quality at multiple international cargo stations.
A Future-Ready Approach to Logistics
Kerry Mok, President and CEO of SATS, emphasized the transformative potential of the agreement, stating:
“Our partnership with Vietnam Airlines is a significant milestone in SATS’ commitment to expanding air logistics capabilities in high-growth markets. Together, we aim to bring world-class cargo handling services to Vietnam’s newest airport, positioning it as a strategic hub in Asia’s supply chain ecosystem.”
Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam’s flag carrier, operates a fleet of 93 aircraft and connects to over 50 domestic and international destinations. With its ambitious expansion into air cargo operations, the airline sees this partnership as a key step in driving efficiency, growth, and international competitiveness.
Strengthening Vietnam’s Position in Global Trade
With Vietnam’s economy on a rapid growth trajectory, the SATS-VNA collaboration underscores the importance of strategic logistics infrastructure in supporting trade, e-commerce, and investment. The Long Thanh cargo terminal is set to play a pivotal role in reducing supply chain bottlenecks, enabling faster, more efficient movement of goods across the region.
As Vietnam strengthens its position as a logistics powerhouse, this partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration in shaping the future of air cargo and supply chain connectivity.
