The TIACA Executive Summit 2025 officially commenced in Hong Kong, bringing together global leaders in air cargo under a shared vision of innovation, resilience, and regional integration. Against the backdrop of the world’s busiest cargo airport, the opening ceremony set a dynamic tone for the two-day summit, highlighting Hong Kong’s strategic logistics capabilities and the industry’s forward-looking agenda.
The event opened with cultural performances and high-level addresses from key industry stakeholders, reinforcing TIACA’s commitment to fostering global collaboration while spotlighting the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a growing engine of cargo connectivity.
Cathay Cargo: Investing in a Smarter, Greener Future

Tom Owen, Director Cargo at Cathay Cargo, addressed the welcome session with a clear statement on the region’s pivotal role in global trade.
“Hong Kong acts as that vital hub within this regional growth engine, leveraging the integrated infrastructure with all the other cities within the GBA,” he said, underlining the city’s role in driving air freight efficiencies across Asia-Pacific.
Owen also revealed Cathay’s ambitious fleet expansion strategy, with over 100 next-generation aircraft being added, including six Airbus A350 freighters, with options for 20 more.
“Together with our industry partners, we hope to shape a smarter, more sustainable, and more connected future,” he affirmed, placing sustainability and scalability at the core of Cathay’s operational roadmap.
Hong Kong International Airport: Reclaiming Global Leadership
Cissy Chan, Executive Director, Commercial of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), echoed the city’s pride in once again being ranked the world’s busiest cargo airport in 2024, a feat she attributed to industry-wide support.
“Thanks to your support, Hong Kong International Airport is prime again,” she said, extending gratitude to cargo stakeholders for enabling HKIA’s resurgence.
She outlined strategic investments including the three-runway system now fully operational, and seamless integration with GBA transport networks, which are enhancing intermodal efficiency and expanding HKIA’s service reach.
Chan also showcased ongoing digitalisation initiatives, notably the HKIA Data Community Platform and Skytopia, a new development blending commercial, cultural, and leisure experiences to reimagine the airport as a multifunctional hub.
Local Leadership and Industry Cohesion

Representing Hong Kong’s ground handling community, Wilson Kwong, CEO of Hactl, offered a regional perspective as both summit sponsor and operator at one of the world’s most advanced air cargo terminals.
“Hong Kong’s position as the world’s busiest cargo airport is only possible through the collective effort of everyone in this room,” Kwong stated, acknowledging the strength of stakeholder collaboration.
Kwong reflected on broader industry trends shaped by shifting geopolitics, digital transformation, and generational change.
“We are navigating a rapidly changing landscape, defined not just by external forces but also by the way we evolve internally as an industry,” he said, urging delegates to embrace innovation and inclusivity.
Global Unity, Shared Resilience
Steven Polmans, Chair of TIACA, offered a reflective yet forward-facing keynote, expressing deep appreciation for the warm welcome from Hong Kong.
“There is truly no better place to meet, reconnect with old friends, and make new ones,” he remarked.
He paid tribute to recent losses in the air cargo community, including the tragic Air India incident and the passing of FedEx founder Fred Smith, highlighting the industry’s emotional and human core.
“These moments remind us of the deep connections and shared values that unite us.”
Polmans also championed a mindset of optimism in the face of global volatility.
“Where others only see risks, we also see opportunity. That mindset is what drives us forward in this ever-evolving global landscape,” he concluded.
A Platform for Strategic Dialogue
With discussions set to span decarbonisation, digital integration, trade facilitation, and resilience planning, TIACA Executive Summit 2025 is positioning itself as a strategic forum for the global cargo industry. The choice of Hong Kong—a city at the crossroads of East and West and a leader in integrated logistics—underscores the event’s regional significance and global ambitions.
As the air cargo industry adapts to a shifting global order, the summit’s opening day affirmed that innovation, partnership, and regional connectivity will shape the next chapter in air freight leadership.
