Brussels Airport’s cargo volumes grew by 2.9 per cent in November compared to the same month last year as a growing belly network to Asia boosted figures.
The Belgian gateway handled 64,407 tonnes in the month, with trucked air freight in particular recorded a robust 31.3 per cent growth to 16,752 tonnes compared to November last year, due to the limited capacity on full cargo flights and passenger flights.
Freighters and express services recorded a fall of eight per cent (14,845 tonnes) and six per cent (18,624 tonnes) respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Brussels Airport said as Amsterdam had reached its maximum flight limit in November 2017, a lot of these flights were re-routed to Brussels. In the meantime, the bulk of these flights have returned to Amsterdam.
Belly cargo went up by 2.3 per cent (14,187 tonnes) compared to November of last year, as new routes to Asia launched by Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines boosted numbers. So far this year from January to November, total cargo is up 6.2 per cent to 669,477 tonnes, compared to the same 11 months last year. Belly cargo is up 15.3 per cent, trucked cargo is up 19.7 per cent, but freighter cargo is down 4.8 per cent and express services freight is down 0.7 per cent.
