Swissport International AG has once again won the license to provide airport ground handling services to airline customers at Berlin Airport (BER). The new license, set to start in December 2022, will be valid for seven years.

Swissport International AG will continue to provide ground services at Berlin Airport after successfully competing for license renewal from the airport operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg (FBB). The new license will run for seven years until 2029 and grants Swissport the authorization to cover all activities on the airport apron, such as the loading and unloading of aircraft, the transport of cargo and baggage, and aircraft movement services.

“We are pleased to be able to serve our airline customers at Berlin Airport with professional ground services for another seven years. The license extension is a credit to all our people,” said Philipp Frech, Head of Germany & Austria at Swissport International AG.“At Berlin Airport, we will continue to prioritize training and providing highly qualified staff. We’ll also invest in state-of-the-art equipment – most of which is electrically powered – to further improve the carbon footprint of our operation and contribute towards greener aviation.”

Swissport has been operating in Berlin since 2015. The company currently employs a total of around 650 people at BER Airport, including 270 in passenger handling at check-in and at the gates, and a further 350 on the apron and in baggage handling. In the first half of 2022, Swissport Berlin served over 1.6m passengers (January-June 2021: 0.23m passengers) and handled almost 15,000 flights (January-June 2021: 2,000 flights) and 4,900 tons of cargo (January-June 2021: 2,700 tons).
