Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe and a hub for air traffic and cargo transport.

Despite the efforts of the aviation industry to overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the cargo throughput at Frankfurt Airport continued to decline in January 2023.

According to the latest figures, the cargo throughput at Frankfurt Airport was down 18.8 percent compared to January 2022. This decline was primarily due to the overall economic slowdown caused by the pandemic and the suspension of flights to Russia. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been felt across the globe and has resulted in a significant decrease in global trade and economic activity, leading to a decline in the demand for air cargo services.

The month of January 2023 was also affected by the Chinese New Year celebrations, which began earlier than last year. These celebrations have always resulted in declining cargo volumes as many businesses shut down for the holiday period. This year was no different, and the earlier start to the celebrations led to an even greater decline in cargo throughput.

Despite the decline in cargo throughput, the aircraft movements at Frankfurt Airport increased by 20.6 percent to 29,710 takeoffs and landings in January 2023. This increase was largely driven by the recovery of passenger traffic, which has slowly begun to return to pre-pandemic levels. The accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) also grew by 15.4 percent to about 1.9 million metric tons compared to January 2022.

In conclusion, while the cargo throughput at Frankfurt Airport continued to decline in January 2023, the overall outlook for the aviation industry is slowly improving. With the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines and the gradual return of passenger traffic, it is expected that the demand for air cargo services will also gradually increase in the coming months. However, it will likely take some time for the industry to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic.
