In response to a series of planned strikes across Belgium that have disrupted air travel, Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) is stepping up to accommodate additional flights, ensuring minimal disruption for both passengers and cargo shipments.
The strikes, set to take place today- Thursday, February 13, have grounded flights across Belgium, including major airports in Brussels and Liège, affecting both passenger and cargo operations. With Belgian airports temporarily closed, MST, the Netherlands’ second-largest air cargo hub, is prepared to handle the overflow, including managing flights that are redirected to the airport.
Joost Meijs, CEO of Maastricht Aachen Airport, expressed pride in the airport’s swift response. “We are proud of our team’s readiness and quick action to ensure that both passenger and cargo flights can continue to operate smoothly. Our strong operational performance and resilience allow us to adapt quickly to such disruptions, ensuring minimal impact for our customers,” Meijs said.
The airport’s strategic location and excellent transport links make it well-equipped to handle the extra flights, ensuring efficient handling of both passengers and cargo. Ethiopian Cargo has also announced additional flights to MST in the coming weeks, further solidifying the airport’s role in the region’s air freight network.
Last year, MST boasted an impressive on-time performance rate of over 98% for cargo handling, far surpassing the industry benchmark of 95%. This high level of efficiency is a testament to the airport’s commitment to providing fast and reliable service, even in the face of unexpected disruptions.
