GEODIS Launches First Healthcare Cold Chain Cross-Dock Facility in the Americas

GEODIS has announced the opening of its first dedicated healthcare cold chain cross-dock facility in the Americas, marking a significant expansion of its temperature-controlled logistics capabilities and reinforcing its position in the high-value pharmaceutical supply chain sector.

Located in Chicago, the 78,000-square-foot Container Freight Station (CFS) and bonded facility includes a purpose-built 5,200-square-foot temperature-controlled zone designed specifically for healthcare products. The site will function as a critical hub within GEODIS’ global freight forwarding network, supporting both air and ocean shipments with specialised handling and short-term storage solutions.

The facility’s strategic proximity to O’Hare International Airport positions it as a high-throughput gateway for international cargo flows. As a bonded CFS operation, it enables streamlined cargo processing while maintaining strict compliance with regulatory requirements. The new infrastructure allows GEODIS to retain end-to-end control over temperature-sensitive shipments moving through its network, which spans more than 170 countries.

Designed to meet the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical sector, the temperature-controlled area is divided into two distinct zones. A 4,600-square-foot section is maintained at controlled room temperature (15–25°C), suitable for a wide range of healthcare products, while a dedicated 600-square-foot refrigerated zone operates within a 2–8°C range for sensitive biologics and vaccines. The facility’s high-clearance design further enhances operational efficiency and storage capacity.

The Chicago site holds key industry certifications, including designation as a Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF) for export shipments and accreditation under the International Air Transport Association Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics (CEIV Pharma). This certification confirms adherence to globally recognised standards for handling, storage, and transportation of pharmaceutical products.

Chicago becomes the fourth GEODIS location in the United States to achieve CEIV Pharma certification, alongside facilities in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles. However, it is the first within the company’s U.S. network to incorporate dedicated cold chain storage infrastructure, representing a notable enhancement of its domestic capabilities.

The development reflects increasing demand for reliable, compliant cold chain logistics solutions, driven by the growth of biopharmaceuticals, personalised medicine, and temperature-sensitive healthcare products. Maintaining strict temperature integrity throughout transit is critical to ensuring product efficacy and patient safety.

GEODIS stated that the new facility is part of a broader global strategy to expand its specialised healthcare logistics network. The company already operates similar cold chain facilities across key international logistics hubs in Europe, including France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany.

With the addition of the Chicago cross-dock, GEODIS aims to strengthen its ability to provide integrated, end-to-end visibility and control across complex supply chains, particularly for high-value and time-critical healthcare shipments.
