New cold-chain corridor strengthens healthcare supply chains between Europe and the United States, enhancing visibility, product integrity and sustainability

Global transport and logistics provider DSV has expanded its specialized Air ThermoDirect healthcare logistics solution with the launch of a dedicated pharmaceutical air freight connection between Luxembourg and Indianapolis, creating a strategic cold-chain corridor linking two major life sciences and healthcare hubs.

The new route represents a significant enhancement of DSV’s global healthcare logistics network, providing pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare customers with greater control, reliability and end-to-end visibility across critical transatlantic supply chains.

By connecting Luxembourg—one of Europe’s most important pharmaceutical logistics gateways—with Indianapolis, a rapidly growing life sciences and healthcare distribution hub in the United States, DSV aims to address increasing industry demand for temperature-controlled logistics solutions capable of safeguarding high-value and time-sensitive healthcare products.

Strengthening Critical Pharmaceutical Supply Chains

The expansion of Air ThermoDirect comes at a time when pharmaceutical supply chains face growing pressure to maintain strict temperature compliance while ensuring rapid and reliable delivery of medicines, vaccines, biologics and other healthcare products.

According to DSV, the new Luxembourg–Indianapolis connection has been specifically designed to reduce the amount of time shipments spend in uncontrolled environments, a critical factor in preserving product efficacy and regulatory compliance.

Unlike traditional pharmaceutical transport models that often rely heavily on active temperature-controlled containers, Air ThermoDirect utilizes an integrated logistics approach that reduces operational complexity while maintaining robust thermal protection throughout the transportation process.

The company believes this approach helps pharmaceutical customers improve supply chain performance while reducing costs, lowering emissions and minimizing operational risks.

As healthcare products become increasingly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, maintaining uninterrupted cold-chain integrity has become one of the most important priorities for pharmaceutical manufacturers and logistics providers worldwide.

Connecting Two Strategic Healthcare Hubs

Luxembourg has long established itself as a leading European pharmaceutical logistics gateway, benefiting from advanced cargo infrastructure, specialized healthcare handling facilities and strong connectivity to major global markets.

Indianapolis, meanwhile, has emerged as one of North America’s fastest-growing life sciences and healthcare logistics centers, supported by significant pharmaceutical manufacturing activity and extensive distribution capabilities.

By linking these two strategic locations through a dedicated healthcare logistics solution, DSV is creating a more predictable and scalable supply chain corridor capable of supporting growing pharmaceutical trade flows between Europe and the United States.

The route also strengthens DSV’s ability to support healthcare customers across broader international markets, including North America, Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Industry experts increasingly view dedicated pharmaceutical logistics corridors as essential infrastructure for supporting the movement of advanced therapies, biologics and personalized medicines that require precise environmental control and continuous monitoring throughout transit.

Enhanced Visibility and End-to-End Control

A key advantage of the Air ThermoDirect solution is its emphasis on supply chain visibility and accountability.

DSV noted that modern healthcare logistics are no longer defined solely by transportation capacity. Instead, successful pharmaceutical supply chains depend on control, consistency and comprehensive oversight from origin to destination.

The Indianapolis expansion is expected to strengthen end-to-end visibility capabilities, allowing customers to monitor shipments more effectively while improving responsiveness to potential disruptions.

Kenneth Källström, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Healthcare at DSV, emphasized the strategic importance of the new hub within the company’s global healthcare logistics network.

He noted that Indianapolis will play a pivotal role in enhancing visibility and operational control across pharmaceutical manufacturing regions spanning the United States, Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. By reinforcing these critical supply chain connections, DSV aims to ensure that life-saving therapies are transported with greater speed, reliability and integrity, ultimately benefiting patients around the world.

Supporting Sustainability Objectives

In addition to improving operational performance, the Luxembourg–Indianapolis route has been designed with sustainability considerations in mind.

DSV stated that optimized cargo handling processes and the use of more sustainable thermal solutions can help reduce the environmental impact associated with pharmaceutical transportation.

As healthcare companies increasingly incorporate environmental targets into their supply chain strategies, logistics providers are under growing pressure to deliver solutions that balance product protection with sustainability goals.

The Air ThermoDirect model seeks to support both objectives by minimizing unnecessary handling while maintaining strict temperature-control standards throughout transit.

Expanding the Air ThermoDirect Network

The Indianapolis addition forms part of DSV’s broader strategy to expand its Air ThermoDirect healthcare network and strengthen control over critical points within the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Stephanie Penarete, Vice President Air Product Americas at DSV, highlighted the significance of the Indianapolis operation, known internally as “Indy Wings,” within the company’s healthcare logistics strategy.

According to Penarete, the initiative reflects DSV’s commitment to bringing critical supply chain touchpoints under full operational accountability, ensuring high levels of reliability, product integrity and performance. By connecting key pharmaceutical hubs with greater precision and resilience, the company aims to deliver enhanced service quality to healthcare customers worldwide.

Meeting the Evolving Needs of Global Healthcare Logistics

The launch of the Luxembourg–Indianapolis route reflects the continued evolution of pharmaceutical logistics, where product sensitivity, regulatory compliance and supply chain transparency have become increasingly important.

As pharmaceutical companies expand production of biologics, advanced therapies and temperature-sensitive medicines, demand for specialized cold-chain solutions is expected to continue growing.

By strengthening connectivity between two major healthcare logistics hubs and expanding the reach of its Air ThermoDirect network, DSV is positioning itself to support the next generation of global healthcare supply chains while ensuring that critical medical products reach patients safely, efficiently and sustainably.

The new service further reinforces the company’s role as a key logistics partner to the life sciences sector and underscores the increasing importance of dedicated pharmaceutical freight corridors in the global air cargo industry.
