Innovative Next Flight Out solution enabled faster delivery and lower costs than a dedicated charter, highlighting ACS’s expertise in complex global cargo logistics
London, UK: Air Charter Service (ACS), one of the world’s leading aircraft charter specialists, has successfully completed a complex 20-flight Next Flight Out (NFO) operation to transport nearly 65 tonnes of energy machinery from Shanghai, China, to the United States, demonstrating the growing role of flexible scheduled air freight solutions in meeting time-critical industrial logistics requirements.
Managed by ACS’s Time Critical division, the multimodal air cargo operation utilised 20 separate scheduled flights instead of a dedicated charter aircraft, enabling the shipment to reach its destination ahead of the customer’s deadline while delivering significant cost savings. The project has been confirmed through Air Charter Service’s official announcement.
Tailored logistics solution for time-sensitive cargo
The project began when a customer approached ACS with an urgent requirement to transport approximately 65 tonnes of specialised machinery from Shanghai to Nashville, Tennessee, for the energy sector.
Rather than immediately recommending a full aircraft charter, ACS evaluated multiple transportation options, comparing the advantages of dedicated charter services with its premium Next Flight Out (NFO) solution.
After assessing aircraft availability, operational timelines, flight permit requirements and overall project costs, ACS concluded that a carefully coordinated scheduled cargo operation would provide the most efficient and economical solution.
The resulting logistics plan combined 20 individual scheduled cargo departures operating over several days, creating a highly synchronised transportation programme capable of meeting the customer’s demanding delivery schedule.
Chicago selected as strategic gateway
Instead of flying directly into Nashville, ACS strategically routed the shipment through Chicago, taking advantage of the airport’s greater international cargo connectivity and operational capabilities.
Chicago was selected because it offered:
- Higher frequency of scheduled cargo services
- Faster cargo handling and processing capabilities
- Improved operational flexibility
- Lower overall transportation costs
- Efficient onward delivery to the final destination in Tennessee
The routing strategy enabled ACS to significantly reduce transit time while avoiding many of the operational constraints associated with direct services to smaller cargo destinations.
By leveraging one of North America’s largest cargo gateways, the company successfully balanced speed, efficiency and cost-effectiveness throughout the operation.
Rapid planning and global coordination
According to ACS, the complete transportation solution was presented to the customer on the same day the enquiry was received, highlighting the company’s ability to rapidly design customised logistics programmes for urgent cargo movements.
Following customer approval, the first shipment departed only a few days later, with the remaining consignments carefully scheduled across multiple departures.
Managing 20 separate flights required continuous coordination between airlines, airports, handling agents and logistics partners operating across several time zones.
ACS’s dedicated 24-hour operations team, working alongside colleagues located in international offices worldwide, monitored every departure and arrival to ensure each shipment progressed according to schedule.
The around-the-clock operational oversight proved particularly important during overnight departures and transfers, where precise coordination was essential to maintaining the project’s tight delivery timeline.
Delivering ahead of schedule
Despite the complexity of moving dozens of consignments across multiple scheduled flights, the entire shipment was completed in just over one week, with all cargo arriving before the customer’s required deadline.
Equally significant was the financial outcome of the project.
By selecting the Next Flight Out solution instead of chartering a dedicated freighter aircraft, ACS was able to complete the operation at a lower overall cost while maintaining the speed and reliability required for the time-critical shipment.
The project illustrates how carefully planned scheduled cargo solutions can, in certain circumstances, outperform traditional charter operations in terms of both cost efficiency and operational flexibility.
Expertise beyond traditional charter services
Commenting on the project, Robert Alleman, Chief Executive Officer of ACS Time Critical, said the assignment highlighted the value of offering customers multiple premium logistics solutions rather than relying solely on charter aircraft.
“One of our customers came to us with 65 tons of machinery that they needed to get from Shanghai in China to Nashville, Tennessee. Having a wide range of premium cargo services available to our clients really paid off in this situation. We looked at both charter and NFO options separately to decide on the best option for the customer.”
He explained that obtaining permits for a dedicated charter, together with other operational considerations, made the scheduled-flight solution the more practical option.
“Due to a number of factors, including the wait for all flight permits, we came up with a comprehensive 20-flight NFO solution.”
Alleman noted that routing the cargo through Chicago created significant operational advantages.
“This option was the logical choice as it offered more frequent flights and better-suited handling capabilities, processing the cargo quicker, as well as making the whole operation more cost effective.”
He added that the successful execution relied heavily on global teamwork and continuous operational monitoring.
“To stay on top of all the departures and arrivals, especially at nighttime, we enlisted the help of our 24-hour operations team, along with ACS colleagues across the world in different time zones, and we had all hands on deck to get them all over the line.”
Reflecting on the project’s successful completion, Alleman said:
“In a little over a week, all the cargo had arrived in time for the customer’s deadline, and for less than the cost of a full charter. The years of NFO expertise really paid off on this job.”
He concluded that customers increasingly rely on ACS not for a specific transport product, but for access to the most appropriate logistics solution.
“Customers don’t necessarily come to us for a specific service—they come to us to move their cargo, knowing we have the options to find the optimum solution.”
Demonstrating the evolution of premium cargo logistics
The successful operation reflects a broader shift in the global air cargo industry, where logistics providers are increasingly combining scheduled air freight capacity, digital planning tools and specialised operational expertise to deliver time-critical cargo efficiently and cost-effectively.
While dedicated aircraft charters remain essential for oversized, urgent or exclusive shipments, premium Next Flight Out solutions are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative for complex industrial projects requiring rapid delivery without the expense of a full aircraft charter.
By successfully coordinating 20 scheduled flights across multiple international routes within just over a week, Air Charter Service has demonstrated how operational flexibility, global coordination and intelligent route planning can deliver reliable, customer-focused logistics solutions for complex industrial cargo movements across international supply chains.
