- Doncaster Sheffield Airport has moved a step closer to reopening after the UK Civil Aviation Authority approved a public consultation on its Airspace Change Proposal, a key regulatory requirement for restoring controlled airspace.
- The public consultation will run from 3 August to 4 October 2026, inviting residents, businesses and aviation stakeholders to review the proposed airspace plans and submit feedback through online and in-person consultation channels.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has taken a significant step towards resuming operations after the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved the launch of a public consultation on its Airspace Change Proposal (ACP), a key regulatory requirement for restoring controlled airspace around the airport.
The consultation will run from 3 August to 4 October 2026, providing residents, businesses, aviation stakeholders and other interested parties an opportunity to review the proposed airspace design and submit feedback before the next phase of the airport’s reopening programme. The consultation has been approved by the CAA as part of the UK Airspace Change Process, which governs modifications to controlled airspace.
Reinstating controlled airspace is considered a critical component of the airport’s operational readiness, enabling the safe management of aircraft arrivals and departures once commercial services resume.
Stakeholders will be able to access detailed consultation documents through an online portal, while a series of in-person consultation events will also be organised. In addition, printed copies of the consultation material will be available at 14 locations across the local area to encourage wider community participation.
Christian Foster, Director of FlyDoncaster Ltd, the company responsible for operating Doncaster Sheffield Airport, described the consultation as one of the most important milestones in the airport’s reopening journey.
“A reopening project of this scale includes a number of important milestones, but being able to go out to public consultation around our airspace is one that is absolutely crucial,” Foster said.
“We want to hear the views of people from across Doncaster and beyond, so that they can have a meaningful say about the airspace connected to this airport. As a community asset, it’s vital that we engage with those who live and work nearby and ensure we listen to the views of local people.”
According to Foster, achieving this regulatory milestone also enables the airport to continue discussions with airlines, operators and other aviation partners as preparations for reopening gather pace.
“Reaching another milestone in this process allows us to accelerate the good work that has already been done to engage with airlines and operators, helping to ensure that we can reopen the airport in a safe and successful manner. We continue to build an expert team to help us do that and we look forward to hearing the views expressed during the consultation,” he added.
The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport has attracted considerable interest from the regional aviation and logistics sectors. Once operational, the airport is expected to support passenger services while also strengthening opportunities for cargo operations, aerospace activities and regional economic development, leveraging its extensive runway infrastructure and strategic location within South Yorkshire.
The public consultation represents another important milestone in the regulatory pathway towards restoring commercial operations, with the feedback received forming part of the CAA’s ongoing assessment of the proposed airspace design.
