New three-litre reusable solution enhances pharmaceutical and clinical trial logistics with up to 96 hours of validated thermal protection.
Cold Chain Technologies (CCT), a global provider of temperature-controlled packaging and digital monitoring solutions, has expanded its reusable cold chain portfolio with the launch of EcoFlex XS, a compact, three-litre reusable shipper designed for transporting small-volume temperature-sensitive products. The new addition targets applications including clinical trial samples, pharmaceutical product distribution, blood products, diagnostic specimens and other life sciences shipments requiring reliable thermal protection. The product launch has been confirmed by the company through its official announcement.
The EcoFlex XS extends the company’s established EcoFlex reusable shipping range while addressing growing demand for smaller, more efficient packaging solutions across the pharmaceutical and healthcare logistics sectors. By offering reduced size and weight without compromising thermal performance, the shipper is designed to improve shipping efficiency while supporting sustainability objectives.
Designed for Multiple Temperature Ranges
EcoFlex XS has been engineered to support three key temperature profiles commonly required in pharmaceutical logistics:
- Refrigerated (RFG)
- Controlled Room Temperature (CRT)
- Frozen (FRG)
The shipper has successfully met ISTA 3A physical testing requirements and demonstrated strong thermal performance during ISTA 7D qualification testing.
According to Cold Chain Technologies, validated thermal durations include:
- Up to 96 hours for refrigerated shipments under winter conditions.
- Up to 89.7 hours for controlled room temperature shipments under summer conditions.
- Up to 66.2 hours for frozen shipments under winter conditions.
These performance levels make the solution suitable for global pharmaceutical distribution networks where maintaining product integrity throughout transit is critical.
Innovative Thermal Design
A key feature of the EcoFlex XS is the integration of a specially designed thermal bag within its 178 mm × 178 mm × 89 mm payload compartment.
The thermal bag functions as a heat deflector, helping to stabilize internal temperatures and extend thermal duration throughout transportation. This design enhancement supports consistent protection for temperature-sensitive healthcare products while maintaining the reusable characteristics of the EcoFlex platform.
Smaller Footprint, Lower Freight Costs
Compared with the existing EcoFlex Small shipper, the new EcoFlex XS offers significant logistics efficiencies.
Cold Chain Technologies states that the new model delivers:
- 25.64% reduction in overall shipping volume
- 25.4% reduction in weight
The smaller dimensions are expected to lower freight costs, improve transport efficiency and reduce environmental impact by minimizing packaging material and transportation requirements.
Meeting Growing Demand for Clinical Trial Logistics
David Webber, Senior Global Marketing Manager at Cold Chain Technologies, said the EcoFlex XS was developed in response to increasing market demand for compact, reusable temperature-controlled packaging solutions.
He noted that interest has been particularly strong from organizations involved in clinical trial sample distribution, pharmaceutical product sampling and diagnostic logistics, where smaller payloads require the same level of thermal protection as larger shipments.
Webber added that by maintaining the same reusable platform and thermal technologies found across the broader EcoFlex portfolio, the company has been able to offer customers a smaller-format shipper that delivers meaningful reductions in shipment size and weight while maintaining validated thermal performance.
Supporting Sustainable Cold Chain Operations
Like the wider EcoFlex family, the EcoFlex XS is fully compatible with Cold Chain Technologies’ ReNewrefurbishment and renewal programme, which enables reusable packaging to be collected, refurbished and redeployed for multiple shipping cycles.
The shipper also features clear external graphics identifying it as reusable, helping encourage return and reuse throughout the supply chain.
Available immediately in refrigerated, controlled room temperature and frozen configurations, EcoFlex XS further strengthens Cold Chain Technologies’ portfolio of reusable cold chain solutions as pharmaceutical manufacturers and logistics providers continue to seek more sustainable and cost-efficient packaging options for sensitive healthcare products.
