Cargo volumes at Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) have continued to grow “steadily”, bucking the “downward national trend” experienced by other hubs in Germany.
During the first six months of this year, airfreight volumes increased by 4% to 633,856 tonnes, which, the hub said, underlies its role in facilitating the movement of essential goods throughout the pandemic.
LEJ added that during this period, there were around 1,000 cargo flights per week operating to/from the hub.
In June this year, LEJ handled 114,367 tonnes of cargo – 16% more than in the same month last year.
“With this positive development, the airport is securing central Germany’s vital logistics and supply chains for the population and the economy,” LEJ said in a statement.
LEJ attributes the growth in airfreight demand to DHL Express’ operations at the hub, as well as an increased number of cargo and special charter flights.
LEJ also experienced a 70% decline in passenger traffic in the first half, due to coronavirus-related travel restrictions.
