Bridges Air Cargo Launches Regular E190F Freighter Operations, Linking Malta with North Africa and Europe

Bridges Air Cargo has commenced scheduled operations using the converted Embraer E190F, marking a significant step in its strategy to strengthen regional air cargo connectivity across the Mediterranean.

The Maltese operator confirmed that regular services are now underway, linking Rome Fiumicino Airport, Malta International Airport, and Mitiga International Airport. The network is designed to facilitate efficient cargo flows between Southern Europe and North Africa while positioning Malta as a growing logistics gateway.

In a company statement, Bridges highlighted the operational flexibility of the new freighter platform, noting that the aircraft enables “reliable and responsive freight solutions” tailored to both scheduled and ad hoc charter demand. The airline also emphasised its ambition to expand Malta’s role in regional supply chains, particularly for time-sensitive and express cargo.

Regional Collaboration and First Arrival Milestone

The inaugural arrival of the E190F in Tripoli was supported by ASFAR Avia, which handled the aircraft at Mitiga International Airport. The milestone flight was marked by a ceremonial water cannon salute, underscoring the operational significance of the new route and the collaborative efforts behind its launch.

ASFAR Avia described the operation as a reflection of its commitment to facilitating seamless cargo movements in Libya and strengthening partnerships with international operators entering the market.

Fleet Development and Market Positioning

Bridges Air Cargo had previously conducted its first commercial E190F flight earlier this month, following its designation as the launch operator for the programme in 2025. The aircraft, registered 9H-BRD, is leased from US-based lessor Regional One.

The airline, which obtained its Air Operator Certificate in Malta in 2023, focuses on providing tailored logistics solutions for the express and courier sector. Its customer base includes global integrators such as FedEx, DHL, and UPS.

E-Jet Freighter Programme Gains Momentum

The aircraft deployed by Bridges forms part of the passenger-to-freighter conversion programme launched by Embraerin 2022. The initiative targets the conversion of E190 and E195 regional jets into dedicated cargo aircraft, addressing growing demand for right-sized freighter capacity in underserved regional markets.

According to Embraer, the E-Jet freighter platform offers up to 40% greater volumetric capacity and significantly extended range compared with large turboprop freighters, while delivering operating cost advantages of up to 30% over larger narrowbody cargo aircraft.

The E190F combines main deck and lower deck cargo configurations, with a maximum structural payload of approximately 13,500 kg. Its larger counterpart, the E195F, is designed to accommodate payloads of up to 14,300 kg.

Strengthening Mediterranean Cargo Flows

The introduction of the E190F into Bridges’ fleet reflects a broader industry trend toward deploying mid-size freighters capable of serving secondary routes with greater efficiency. By connecting Malta directly with key European and North African markets, the airline is positioning itself to capitalise on increasing demand for agile, short- to medium-haul cargo solutions.

As supply chains continue to diversify and regional trade lanes gain prominence, platforms such as the E190F are expected to play an increasingly important role in bridging capacity gaps between major hub airports and emerging cargo centres.
