Cargo volumes up 30% at Mumbai Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai saw a 30% rise in cargo volumes in the financial year 2022, compared to the previous financial year.

The airport handled a total of 556,900 metric tonnes (MT) of import and export cargo in the financial year 2022.

CSMIA recorded total imports of 260,600 metric tonnes and exports of 296,300 metric tonnes.

International cargo volumes grew by 26%, while domestic cargo volumes were up by 40% compared to the previous year.

The top three destinations for imports via CSMIA include China, Germany, and the US, respectively. The US, UAE, and Germany remain the top destinations in terms of exports.

Automobiles, pharmaceutical products, and engineering goods were the most transported goods internationally, while the top domestic destinations primarily saw engineering goods, documents and samples, and postal cargo.

Airlines that handled the most cargo from CSMIA  in the domestic segment include IndiGo, SpiceJet, and GoFirst. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines were the top three airlines internationally.

Pharma was a focus area for the airport and in the financial year, 2022 CSMIA worked towards transporting a total of 397m doses of vaccines out of which 58m doses were exported to 76 international destinations and 339m doses were transported to 49 domestic destinations.

Additionally, 1,000 tons of oxygen concentrators, 50 tons of oxygen generators, and 150 metric tonnes of Covid relief medicines were handled at CSMIA’s air cargo terminal.
