American Airlines Group has appointed aviation and air cargo industry veteran John W. Dietrich to its Board of Directors, adding more than three decades of operational, financial and leadership experience across the global aviation sector.

Dietrich will serve on the board’s Audit Committee and Finance Committee, bringing extensive expertise gained from senior roles spanning cargo airlines, passenger aviation and global transportation organisations.

His career includes 28 years with Atlas Air Worldwide, where he held a series of executive leadership positions, including President and Chief Executive Officer and membership of the company’s board of directors. He was appointed President in 2019 after previously serving as Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the company’s worldwide operations and global aviation activities.

During his tenure at Atlas Air, Dietrich played a key role in managing one of the world’s largest outsourced aircraft operating platforms, supporting cargo, charter and specialised aviation operations across international markets.

Earlier in his career, Dietrich served as General Counsel at Atlas Air and spent more than a decade at United Airlines, primarily in legal and corporate roles.

Most recently, Dietrich served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of FedEx Corporation from 2023 to 2026, where he led the company’s global finance organisation and supported initiatives focused on operational efficiency, cost management and long-term value creation.

Aviation Leadership Strengthens American’s Board

American Airlines Group Chairman Greg Smith welcomed Dietrich’s appointment, highlighting his extensive aerospace background and leadership experience.

“John possesses a distinguished professional background and a proven track record over his 35 years of aerospace leadership,” Smith said.

He added that Dietrich’s experience managing complex, capital-intensive aviation operations, combined with his expertise in financial discipline, risk management and corporate governance, would strengthen the board’s focus on sustainable performance and long-term value creation.

American Airlines Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom also highlighted the importance of Dietrich’s operational and financial expertise.

“His experience leading global aviation and cargo businesses and his focus on execution and accountability will be a valuable addition to our board,” Isom said.

Continued Engagement Across the Aviation Industry

Dietrich remains actively involved in the wider aviation and transportation sectors. He currently serves as Chairman of the National Defense Transportation Association and sits on the boards of AAR Corporation and First Horizon Corporation.

He is also a former Chairman of the National Air Carrier Association and previously served as a member of the IATA Board of Governors, reflecting his long-standing involvement in global aviation policy and industry leadership.

Dietrich holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.

Supporting American Airlines’ Global Growth Strategy

American Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers, operates more than 6,000 daily flights serving over 350 destinations across more than 60 countries. The airline supports a global workforce of approximately 130,000 aviation professionals and serves more than 200 million customers annually.

Dietrich’s appointment comes as airlines continue to navigate a changing aviation environment shaped by evolving cargo demand, operational efficiency requirements, financial discipline and long-term investment in global connectivity.

His combined experience across air cargo, passenger aviation, finance and corporate governance is expected to provide valuable insight as American Airlines Group continues to strengthen its position in the global aviation market.
