The US Department of Transportation (US DOT) has allocated $5.8m to Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) to expand its cargo operations.
The money will be used to construct a larger cargo apron to “meet growing demand”.
US Senator Dick Durbin commented: “Chicago RFD is not only a vital transportation asset, it’s an economic driver for all of Northern Illinois.
“Thanks to continued federal investment, the ongoing expansion and upgrades at RFD will create jobs and ensure we can keep up with increased air cargo demands. I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Duckworth and Congresswoman Bustos to bring these investments to Rockford.”
US Congresswoman Cheri Bustos added: “Our region depends on the Chicago Rockford International Airport as a backbone for our local economy and provides jobs for our Rockford community. I’m glad to see an increase in federal investment that will allow RFD to continue to grow”.
Amazon and UPS are two of the shipping agencies which use the airport.
