Highlights

  • New African cargo corridor: TAAG Angola Airlines has launched its first dedicated freighter service between Luanda and Lusaka, strengthening regional air cargo connectivity and supporting trade across Southern Africa.
  • Growing cargo demand: The inaugural Boeing 737-800 freighter carried 12.8 tonnes of freight from Europe, with subsequent flights already scheduled to transport between 14 and 16 tonnes, reflecting strong market demand.
  • Strategic expansion: The new route forms part of TAAG’s North–South logistics corridor, linking Europe, China and Brazil with African markets, while plans are underway to launch cargo services to Libreville, Gabon later in 2026.

TAAG Angola Airlines has strengthened its position in Africa’s growing air cargo market with the launch of its inaugural dedicated freighter service between Luanda, Angola, and Lusaka, Zambia, marking another milestone in the carrier’s strategy to expand regional logistics connectivity.

The first flight departed Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport in Luanda on 24 July, arriving at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka aboard a Boeing 737-800 freighter carrying 12.8 tonnes of cargo. The shipment, originating in Amsterdam, comprised machine parts, IT equipment, personal effects and other high-value goods, underscoring the route’s role in supporting diversified trade flows between Europe and Africa.

Initially operating as a weekly service, the Luanda–Lusaka route has already demonstrated encouraging commercial momentum. According to TAAG, cargo bookings for subsequent flights have reached 14 tonnes and 16 tonnes, highlighting robust demand from freight forwarders and regional shippers.

Strengthening Africa’s North–South Logistics Corridor

The Lusaka service forms a key component of TAAG’s broader strategy to establish a stronger North–South logistics corridor across the African continent. By creating a new cargo gateway through Luanda, the airline is positioning itself to facilitate freight originating from Europe, China and Brazil, while improving distribution into Southern and Central African markets.

The expansion enhances TAAG’s dedicated freighter network, which now connects Lagos, Brazzaville, Abidjan, Accra, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Lusaka, reinforcing the airline’s ambition to become a leading regional cargo operator.

The operation is supported through a strategic partnership with NAC2000, which has been appointed as TAAG’s ramp and cargo handling service provider, as well as its General Sales and Services Agent (GSSA) in Zambia. The collaboration is expected to ensure efficient ground handling and commercial support as the airline develops its presence in the Zambian market.

Supporting Regional Trade and Exports

Beyond improving import logistics, the new service is also expected to strengthen Zambia’s export capabilities.

The route aligns with the objectives of the Airlift Zambia initiative, which aims to improve air cargo capacity for the country’s export industries. Enhanced connectivity is expected to facilitate international shipments of agricultural and perishable products, including beef, poultry and horticultural produce, while providing exporters with faster access to overseas markets.

For Zambia, improved freighter connectivity offers greater opportunities to integrate local producers into global supply chains, while providing importers with more reliable access to industrial equipment, technology products and high-value cargo.

Further Cargo Network Expansion Planned

TAAG has indicated that its cargo expansion programme will continue during the fourth quarter of 2026 with the planned launch of a new dedicated freighter route connecting Luanda and Libreville, Gabon.

The additional service is expected to further strengthen intra-African cargo connectivity as airlines continue investing in regional freighter operations to meet growing demand for faster, more reliable logistics solutions across the continent.

With African trade continuing to expand under regional economic integration initiatives and rising demand for time-sensitive cargo, TAAG’s growing freighter network reflects increasing confidence in the long-term potential of the continent’s air cargo sector.
