Two of the world’s leading cargo-centric hubs — Liege Airport (LGG) in Belgium and Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) in the United States — have signed a sister airport agreement during Air Cargo Southeast Asia 2025 in Singapore. The partnership establishes a formal framework for strategic cooperation aimed at enhancing transatlantic airfreight operations and advancing innovation in logistics efficiency.
The agreement focuses on key areas of collaboration, including increasing freighter traffic, joint marketing initiatives, and the development of shared digital and operational innovations to streamline cargo processes between Europe and North America.
“This agreement is a testament to our shared vision for the future of air cargo,” said Torsten Wefers, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Liege Airport. “Together with Chicago Rockford International Airport, we are building a robust transatlantic corridor that will benefit shippers, carriers, and the global supply chain.”
Zachary Oakley, Executive Director of Chicago Rockford International Airport, echoed the sentiment, adding:
“Liege and Rockford are both cargo-focused airports with complementary strengths. This partnership formalises our collaboration and sets the stage for exciting new opportunities.”
A Strategic Transatlantic Alliance
Both Liege Airport and RFD are recognised as key global freight gateways serving express operators, integrators, and dedicated freighter carriers. The sister airport initiative will not only strengthen connectivity between Europe and North America but also promote sustainability, digitalisation, and data-driven operational excellence.
By sharing best practices and investing in collaborative innovation, the two airports aim to optimise transatlantic air cargo routes, reduce bottlenecks, and support the growing demand for reliable and efficient freight services.
The partnership highlights a broader industry trend toward deeper international cooperation among secondary cargo hubs, which are increasingly playing a pivotal role in the resilience and diversification of global supply chains.
