Allegiant, the Las Vegas-based travel company and owner of low-cost carrier Allegiant Air, has completed the acquisition of Sun Country Airlines, the Minneapolis–St. Paul-based airline known for its Amazon Prime Air freighter operations. The deal preserves Sun Country’s dedicated cargo services for Amazon, ensuring continuity of the carrier’s multi-year domestic logistics contract.
Under the agreement, both airlines will continue to operate independently until the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approves a single operating certificate, maintaining seamless service during the transition period. Allegiant confirmed that Sun Country’s long-term contract with Amazon will remain unchanged, underscoring the importance of the freighter business to the airline’s overall operations.
Sun Country operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 737-800 freighters on behalf of Amazon, transporting parcels across the United States and playing a central role in Amazon’s domestic logistics network. The airline’s expertise in narrow-body freighter operations makes it one of the key cargo carriers in the US. In addition to its cargo operations, Sun Country continues to offer scheduled passenger services throughout North America, maintaining its dual role as both a passenger and cargo airline.
“Sun Country remains a major narrow-body freighter operator in the United States,” Allegiant said, noting that the Amazon contract continues to be a core component of the airline’s business.
Sun Country began flying for Amazon in May 2020 under a 10-aircraft sublease arrangement, which was subsequently expanded. By November 2025, the airline had fully deployed its fleet of 20 freighters and reported a 50% year-on-year increase in cargo revenue, reflecting the growing demand for e-commerce logistics across the US.
The acquisition positions Allegiant to strengthen its cargo portfolio while preserving Sun Country’s operational expertise and network. For Amazon, the deal ensures continued reliability of its domestic freighter operations, supporting fast and predictable deliveries in a market where timely logistics are increasingly critical.
