Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, is set to shutter its air freight facility at Leipzig/Halle airport in eastern Germany as part of an adjustment to its logistics network. A spokesperson for the US-based company explained that the closure of the Amazon Air site is in the works, impacting approximately 400 employees.

The specific date for the closure remains undetermined.

Affected employees will be presented with the option to transfer to other Amazon locations, ensuring a degree of continuity for the workforce, the company stated.

Despite the closure of the air freight center, Amazon underlined its commitment to operating at Leipzig/Halle Airport and utilizing it within its European logistics network.

Established in 2020, the Amazon Air cargo center was designed to facilitate quicker deliveries. The decision to close this facility comes in the wake of Amazon’s substantial expansion of its logistics network during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The increased density of locations in southern Europe allowed for items to be positioned closer to customers, reducing the necessity for some flight connections from Leipzig.
